All-New, All-Capitol Avengers #120 – ‘There’s Hell to Pay’

Posted on January 3, 2024December 28, 2023 by phil.wrede
Agent Charles Little Sky and two S.H.I.E.L.D. troopers sneak out of a warehouse in Washington, D.C. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Capitol Avengers Presents… ‘There’s Hell to Pay’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Little Sky and one trooper converse while a different trooper shoots a grenade at War Machine - the armored hero soars into the sky ahead of the explosion.
War Machine lobs a trio of small missiles at the S.H.I.E.L.D. trooper, and the man crouches into a tiny ball as those missiles explode. Yet another trooper rides up on a motorcycle, here to help Charles Little Sky escape Avengers’ captivity.
One of the troopers hands Little Sky a rifle to carry with him on his escape. A different S.H.I.E.L.D. trooper opens fire on Spider-Woman, and misses.
Spider-Woman repeatedly dodges the gunfire from the S.H.I.E.L.D. trooper and covers the man’s helmet in webbing.
Moon Knight fights still a different trooper, while the one closest to Little Sky draws his sidearm and knife, ready to attack the Avengers.
Moon Knight repeatedly strikes the S.H.I.E.L.D. trooper and knocks him out.
Little Sky climbs on the back of the motorcycle; he and the remaining troopers say their farewells.
Charles Little Sky rides away on the back of the S.H.I.E.L.D. motorcycle, while at the same time Mayor Gruenwald and President Kirby argue over a video call.
The mayor and the president continue to try to bully one another, as Captain America and Wolverine finally emerge from the warehouse, ready to join the battle against the S.H.I.E.L.D. troopers.
Major Steinberg tries to interrupt the argument over the video call, to no avail, just as Cap and Wolverine see that the other Avengers have already defeated their S.H.I.E.L.D. opponents.

We’ve arrived at the end of this arc of the story in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe! If you haven’t been keeping up with All-New, All-Capitol Avengers, you could go back and read all the other installments:

  • Part 1
  • Part 2
  • Part 3
  • Part 4
  • Part 5
  • Part 6

It sure feels like this sometimes-hot, sometimes-cold war that S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers have going is bound to heat up even hotter soon, doesn’t it? All these enemies to fight, from HYDRA and A.I.M., to the Tracksuit Mafia, Justin Hammer, and whatever the Starjammers are up to, and the people who are supposed to be our heroes just can’t stop fighting one another! A more pessimistic person might see that as a commentary on what’s going on in the world, right now, but you’d have to be pretty pessimistic to say that… Right?

A lot of my sound effects lettering work starts by looking through very recent and fairly dated comics installments, to try and maintain stylistic continuity (when necessary) and to get some perspective on what I’ve been doing, relative to what I did before. In 2023, I got way into gradient effects on sound effects (not so much in this week’s comic, but go look around, and you’ll see). I couldn’t say for sure why – maybe I thought they popped better against the art on the rest of the page? Maybe it’s a sign I need to bring the color out in the photographs more! Whatever it is, I’m sure I’ll start overcorrecting soon enough, and begin a whole new trend that will confuse me a couple of months down the line!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
