All-New, All-Eventful Avengers #109 – ‘We Continue to Chase the Sun’

Posted on October 11, 2023October 28, 2023 by phil.wrede
Outside of Justin Hammer’s Long Island mansion in the evening, Jocasta, Luis, James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and Tony Stark approach to attend the Hammer Gala. Tony is in a wheelchair, the result of an accident he suffered while hot-dogging in the Iron Man armor. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Eventful Avengers Presents… ‘We Continue to Chase the Sun’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Tony dismisses Rhodey first, then Luis, and encourages them to have fun at the party.
Inside of the mansion, Justin Hammer (“played” by an action figure of Dr. Ian Malcolm from the film ‘Jurassic Park’) approaches Tony and Jocasta (who have recently been seen in public as a couple).
Hammer mocks Tony for having originally declined the invitation to the gala. Tony and Jocasta try to be polite in their reply.
Hammer attempts to hit on Jocasta, but immediately retreats when his safety is threatened.
Next, Tony and Jocasta are greeted by the Eternal Kingo, and Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. As Tony and Kingo talk, Wanda asks Jocasta if they could speak one-on-one.
Wanda explains to Jocasta that she feels a special kinship for artificial lifeforms after her time with the Vision, but before she can continue…
…Kingo interrupts, and reminds Wanda that they have a “thing” they must go to attend next. Jocasta is left alone, and slightly confused.
In a conversation with Tony, deeper in the mansion, they discuss whether or not Wanda was hitting on Jocasta. Before they can talk any further, they’re approached by Reed Richards and Susan Storm-Richards, from the Fantastic Four.
Sue pulls Jocasta away, to give Reed the opportunity to talk to Tony that he’s been seeking for weeks.
Tony apologizes for ignoring Reed’s messages. Reed pulls out a portable device to show Tony some information that he’s sure Tony will regret ignoring.
True to Reed’s prediction, Tony is stunned by what he sees on the device. When Jocasta asks her what they’re looking at, Sue says that it’s, “an answer for the end of the world.”
On the top half of the image, Tony asks Luis to bring his car back around, and Luis is put out, for he’s just begun having a conversation with the Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

After a couple of weeks of place-setting, we’re here, now, at Justin Hammer’s Fall Ball (more appropriately, the “Hammer Gala”)! Tony and Jocasta really step out with his high-society peers tonight; let’s see how they do!

One of the fun problems about having a “cast” of characters that’s deep, and a list of story ideas that’s even deeper, is that I can often lose track of plot threads I meant to pick up. For instance, we haven’t seen or heard from the Scarlet Witch or Kingo since they made their first appearance over a year ago! I was so pleased with that comic! I kept meaning to build upon it, but other ideas just pushed themselves to the front of my mind, over and over again. It’s easy to say that ideas will emerge from your brain only when they’re good and ready, but in my experience, it’s just as often that you hammer an idea into shape by actually working on it (which is part of why the last two weeks of comic strips featured jokey set-ups for today’s installment). It’s even taken Luis most of the year to jump back into the fray, after I spent so much time crafting his superhero origin…

At least (half of) the Fantastic Four weren’t sitting around for almost a year and a half before they got to rejoin the adventure, right?

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
