All-New, All-Good-PR Avengers #121, ‘No Use in Treading Water’

Posted on January 10, 2024June 19, 2024 by phil.wrede
We see the faces of New York City Mayor Gruenwald (“played” by an action figure of Peter Capaldi), President Kirby (“played” by an action figure of Bruce Campbell), and Major Steinberg (“played” by an action figure of Elisabeth Sladen on a video call. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Good-PR Avengers Presents… ‘No Use in Treading Water’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
On a video call, the Mayor and the President argue about whether or not the President meant to have the Mayor killed, and why.
The President contends that he didn’t actually want the Mayor to die, and Major Steinberg isn’t sure she believes the President.
The Mayor actually understands the President’s reasoning.
In the middle of the conversation, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Charles Little Sky joins the meeting, to report that the Avengers are seeing through the plan.
The President orders Little Sky to reunite with the rest of his S.H.I.E.L.D. teammates before terminating the call. On yet another meeting, Tony Stark and Reed Richards are making the case for their latest press conference to an unknown audience.
It turns out that audience is Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, and they want him to be the emcee for this press conference. Jonah’s journalistic integrity prevents him from being able to accept easily.
Jonah declares that Tony and Reed’s interest in his participation must be because they’re trying to hide something, and he vows to uncover the truth of what it is to the world.
After Jonah hangs up from the call, Reed invites his latest intern, Miles Morales, in to pitch his vision for the involvement of the Midtown High AV club in the press conference.
Miles has an idea for who should be the conference’s host, but he doesn’t say who it is. Reed, showing the level of faith he has in Miles, gives his intern clearance to offer the job to his candidate of choice.

Even though this is the beginning of a whole new storyarc in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Univerise, it might be helpful to go back and read the previous installments of All-New, All-Capitol Avengers, if you haven’t already:

  • Part 1
  • Part 2
  • Part 3
  • Part 4
  • Part 5
  • Part 6
  • Part 7

(This is also building off a foundation laid by my Fantastic Four-centric arc from a little while back, which is probably my favorite series of strips I’ve ever done. Also, referencing an announcement the Midtown High AV Club made to Jonah, even earlier!)

It’s probably obvious by now that I like to use video conference comic strips as transitions between sections of the “main story.” Heck, the original conceit of this comic was built on video meetings! It’s nice, every so often, to be able to chill out and not emphasize kicks to the face and gunfire for a little while. I like to think this comic has something for everybody – if my style is something you can get into, of course – so we’ll be back to energy blasts and bodyslams, soon enough!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
