The stakes of the Mayor and the Major’s visit to Washington, D.C., spike pretty dramatically this week, wouldn’t you say? Maybe soon we’ll get an update on Spider-Woman and Moon Knight’s relationship, too!
On another note: there’s an A&E documentary that I really love, originally called Hollywood Aliens & Monsters, hosted by Mark Hamil, that does a nice sprint through the history of science fiction in mainstream American film, from the Edison Studios’ Frankenstein up through Independence Day. In the portion about The Day The Earth Stood Still, the director, Robert Wise, said that he thought one of the things they did with the movie that helped it stay resonant was to set it very concretely in Washington, D.C. – to show the buildings, the streets, the monuments, all of which are still there, and still recognizable across the generations of audiences. I’m not saying I think I’m telling a story that remotely approaches the level of one of my all-time favorite movies, here, but I also can’t say I haven’t been thinking about Mr. Wise’s remark while working on this comic strip, either.
