All-New, All-Capitol Avengers #115 – ‘It’s Always Here to Stay’

Posted on November 29, 2023November 26, 2023 by phil.wrede
Major Steinberg (“played” here by an action figure of Elisabeth Sladen) and New York City Mayor Gruenwald (“played” by an action figure of Peter Capaldi) stand before the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Capitol Avengers Presents… ‘It’s Always Here to Stay’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Walking around the National Mall, Steinberg and the Mayor both express their wish to return to New York City as soon as possible. Steinberg asks the Mayor why he accepted the President’s invitation to D.C.
The Mayor explains that he wanted to come to actually begin working closely with the President, but they both rub each other the wrong way so emphatically, that it’s impossible. War Machine flies through the sky past the Monument, not noticing their conversation.
Spider-Woman approaches the Major and the Mayor from a distance, shouting for their attention.
Spider-Woman explains that she and War Machine have been looking for the Major and the Mayor, but her explanation is interrupted by a loud gunshot sound.
As they try to pinpoint the source of the noise, another shot rings out, and a bullet whizzes just above the Mayor’s head. Spider-Woman orders them to run for cover.
More bullets fly past, as Spider-Woman fires off a web, muttering to herself that she might need more assistance to sort this situation out.
Swinging through the air, Spider-Woman contacts Moon Knight and Captain America, back in New York City, asking them to come to D.C. as quickly as possible.
Across town, secluded in an abandoned office, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (and personal chaos agent of the President) Charles Little Sky starts to disassemble his enormous sniper rifle, in preparation for his escape from his hiding place.

The stakes of the Mayor and the Major’s visit to Washington, D.C., spike pretty dramatically this week, wouldn’t you say? Maybe soon we’ll get an update on Spider-Woman and Moon Knight’s relationship, too!

On another note: there’s an A&E documentary that I really love, originally called Hollywood Aliens & Monsters, hosted by Mark Hamil, that does a nice sprint through the history of science fiction in mainstream American film, from the Edison Studios’ Frankenstein up through Independence Day. In the portion about The Day The Earth Stood Still, the director, Robert Wise, said that he thought one of the things they did with the movie that helped it stay resonant was to set it very concretely in Washington, D.C. – to show the buildings, the streets, the monuments, all of which are still there, and still recognizable across the generations of audiences. I’m not saying I think I’m telling a story that remotely approaches the level of one of my all-time favorite movies, here, but I also can’t say I haven’t been thinking about Mr. Wise’s remark while working on this comic strip, either.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
