Al-New, All-Defamed Avengers #103 – ‘I Keep a Seat on the Edge’

Posted on August 16, 2023June 2, 2024 by phil.wrede
Inside a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. holding facility, the anti-Avengers hit squad from earlier - Clay Quartermain, Kate Neville, G.W. Bridge, and “Dum Dum” Dugan wait while eating snacks. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Defamed Avengers Presents… ‘I Keep a Seat on the Edge’,” is visible at the top of the image.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents argue over whether or not this facility is a prison. Bridge tells them that they just have to be patient, and wait for another chance to hit the Avengers.
While biting into his taco, Quartermain hears the footsteps of people approaching.
The agents prepare themselves for anything. We see that the approaching people are NYC Police Chief Shooter (named for Marvel editor/creator Jim Shooter, and “played” here by an action figure of Robert Patrick’s T-1000 from the film T-2: Judgement Day), and another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Wurmser (“played” here by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger). Wurmser seems unimpressed by what he sees; Shooter reminds him that both the mayor of NYC and the president like these agents.
Shooter introduces Wurmser to the agents as their new S.H.I.E.L.D. handler.
Wurmser tries to dress down the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents for their reckless behavior, like trying to fight the Avengers in a populated place. He offers to help them in their struggle against the Avengers.
Some of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents know Wurmser’s story, and others don’t. It comes out that his family was killed in an A.I.M. operation, one that he claims the Avengers could have prevented, and didn’t. Bridge doesn’t seem to like Wurmser very much.
Wurmser doesn’t care if the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents like him, and takes out his cell phone to play a video call from President Kirby (named for legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, and “played” here by an action figure of Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise). Kirby orders the agents to listen to their new handler.
Quartermain points out that there were five S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who went out to attack the Avengers, and one of their number is still missing. Neither Shooter nor Wurmser know what he’s talking about.
10. At the top of the image, we see that missing fifth agent, Charles Little Sky, arguing with a guard at the White House. At the bottom of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Every so often, there’s an installment of the main story of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe that doesn’t feature an Avenger – not one! That’s not because I have an incredibly intricate long-term plan to turn this comic into one that features characters of my original creation; most every character in this strip carries the name of a Marvel Comics character, anyway! But, you have to accept that most of the people in the world, even this world, aren’t super-powered, and they all have their own stories, which can intersect with or even impact the stories of our Avengers and their foes!

Sometimes, they might even be Avengers, or their foes!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
