All-New, All-Defamed Avengers #104 – ‘Visit Me In My Dreams’

Posted on August 24, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
On the streets of New York City, Drax, Corsair, Yondu, and Mantis proudly pose. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Defamed Avengers Presents, ‘Visit Me In My Dreams’,’ is visible at the top of the image.
Corsair approaches Rage with questions about the Avengers; Rage tries to brush him off by declaring that he is an Avenger. Drax doesn’t take kindly to this news.
Corsair calls Mantis over to psychically calm Drax down, then ushers Rage off on his way. Yondu approaches Midtown High students Ben Reilly and Lyla Lorman, friends of Miles Morales and fellow members of the AV club.
Yondu tries to show off his space bow-and-arrow to impress the students, but they are not particularly taken with Yondu’s display.
Ben and Lyla walk away from Yondu without listening to more of his pitch. Yondu, Corsair, and Drax all commiserate over the unreceptive audiences their group’s message has encountered in New York City.
Corsair spots U.S. Agent at the other end of the block, and zeroes in on him as the most attractive potential target. U.S. Agent is grumbling to himself about having to pay a fare to take the subway.
Corsair attempts to approach U.S. Agent by talking about Captain America; the Agent doesn’t react well to this tack. Corsair and Mantis offer to introduce the Agent to the real Captain America.
From out of the back of their van steps a Captain America we’ve not seen before (it’s an action figure of Ultimate Captain America, but in the continuity of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, he’s a different person completely from the MCU Cap, who has been the primary Captain America in the PWMAFCU). He and U.S. Agent are immediately aggressive toward one another.
U.S. Agent openly threatens the mystery Cap; Mantis and Drax step up next to him, indicating their willingness to fight U.S. Agent on their teammate’s behalf.
U.S. Agent vows to pick up this fight at some later time. Yondu suggests U.S. Agent take some time to consider if what he thinks he knows about Captain America is true.
Corsair and his Captain America discuss how well that interaction went; Corsair is enthusiastic, but this Cap is less so.
On the top half of the image, Corsair explains to his Cap that now that they’ve raised U.S. Agent’s suspicions, he’s bound to share them with other Avengers, and create dissent within the Avengers’ ranks. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

So, basically, this strip, and my blended version of the Guardians and the Starjammers (which I’m intending to just call the Starjammers) came out of wanting to expand the presence of conspiracy theories and those who hawk them in the comic. Sure, we have some folks who love to do that already, but there’s a difference between people on the street shouting at the Avengers, and characters with powers and abilities equivalent to some Avengers spouting off about the one-world, Avengers-allied-with-the-United-Nations global elite satanic conspiracy.

And, yes, a chunk of the inspiration for this part of the “main story” was my finding a Drax action figure on clearance, and wanting to write some lines for him.

As if things weren’t confusing enough with a Captain America and a U.S. Agent in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, we have a whole other guy who says he’s Captain America, now? All the people he hangs out with are traditionally from, or spend most of their time in space, so does that mean he’s from space, too? Is he from Space America? What’s his deal?

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
