All-New, All-Astounding Avengers #157 – ‘I Don’t Want to Fear’

Posted on October 9, 2024October 8, 2024 by phil.wrede
Justin Hammer (“played” here by an action figure of Jeff Goldblum from Jurassic Park) lies pinned underneath a dropped proton cannon. The android Jocasta sits on top of it, mocking him. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Astounding Avengers Presents… ‘I Don’t Want to Fear’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Hammer and Jocasta have a discussion as the Black Widow and Ironheart fight the Scorpion in the nighttime streets of New York City.
On a nearby rooftop, Emma Frost and Dr. Clark Connors (“played” here by an action figure of Sean Connery from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) face off against Jean Grey. Rather than fight her antagonists, Jean chooses to take over Connors’ mind.
Emma Frost orders Connors to regain control of himself, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, at the Baxter Building, the Fantastic Four continue to fight Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull. Former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Kate Neville notices something in the Negative Zone portal…
…A swarm of Annihilation Reavers, trying to break through! The symbiote Nihilus thrashes wildly at the Thing and the Invisible Woman. Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus finally arrive to assist!
Doc Ock goes to help H.E.R.B.I.E. secure the Negative Zone portal, while Spider-Man goes to help with the fighting.
At the White House, HYDRA agents gun down Secret Service Agent Adams (“played” here by an action figure of Peter Weller from Robocop, and named for legendary comics creator Neal Adams). As President Kirby (“played” by an action figure of Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead series, and named for legendary comics creator Jack Kirby) tries to get revenge, the X-Cutioner knocks his shotgun out of his hand. The X-Cutioner reveals a cell phone, with a video message on it from the Reverend William Stryker (“played” by an action figure of Michael Fassbender from the X-Men movies).
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art (and the U.S. National Archives), the use of fonts by Blambot, the stock visual effects photography by Action VFX, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure and certain background photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
