All-New, All-Astounding Avengers #153 – ‘Heart is the Mind of the Matter’

President Kirby (“played” by an action figure of Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead series, and named for legendary comics creator Jack Kirby) faces off against the X-Cutioner on the White House lawn at night. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Astonishing Avengers Presents… ‘Heart is the Mind of the Matter’,” is visible at the top of the image.
The X-Cutioner is flanked by a HYDRA agent, and eventually, the President is backed up by his personal Secret Service Agent Adams (“played” by an action figure of Peter Weller from Robocop, and named for legendary comics creator Neal Adams).
Kirby and Adams discuss how they got into this mess in the first place (it’s probably the President’s fault).
As S.H.I.E.L.D. troopers take up sniper positions along the roof of the White House, former agent Kate Neville uses her super powers in the Negative Zone to fight off attacking Annihilation Reavers.
Adams is told via headset radio that the troopers have their positions set. Kate punches another Reaver senseless.
Meanwhile, on the streets of New York City, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Wurmser (“played” by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator: Dark Fate) holds two laser blasters on Jay Hansen. They face off, much as Kirby and Adams face down the X-Cutioner.
All three situations continue to intensify, in New York, Washington, D.C., and the Negative Zone.
Kate is caught in midair by one Reaver’s four arms. Simultaneously, in the Fantastic Four’s headquarters (the Baxter Building), the Super-Skrull Kl’rt stomps Mr. Fantastic into the floor.
The X-Cutioner somehow draws a bead on the embedded S.H.I.E.L.D. troopers as the Super-Skrull transforms his hand into a replica of Iron Man’s gauntlet and blasts the Human Torch with a fistful of repulsor beams.
The Thing and the Super-Skrull exchange punches.
The Invisible Woman tries to trap the Super-Skrull’s ally, Nihilus, in a bubble of invisible force, but her bubble is broken by mysterious tentacles that spring from Nihilus’ back…

I don’t think I’ve ever changed the prefix of the title mid-storyarc before, but we’ve long since lost the thread of Justin Hammer’s attempt to stripmine Jocasta’s brain for his own LLM software product, so I thought it was time to accept that the story’s gone off in its own direction. Sometimes stories do that, develop a mind of their own!
