All-New, All-Astounding Avengers #154 – ‘Is Your Heart Palpitating Yet?’

Posted on September 18, 2024September 16, 2024 by phil.wrede
The creature Nihilus stands in the lobby of the Baxter Building, ungodly tentacles whipping from within his body. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Astounding Avengers Presents, ‘Is Your Heart Palpitating Yet?’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Reed Richards and Susan Storm-Richards communicate with their robot assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E., as Nihilus’ transformation continues.
Nihilus has transformed into the psychotic symbiote Carnage, as Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull, and Johnny Storm stand idly aside.
Sue asks H.E.R.B.I.E. to contact Spider-Man. In the meantime, Jay Hansen and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Wurmser (“played” by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator: Dark Fate) face off in the NYC street.
The Starjammer Mantis radios Hansen to report that Drax the Destroyer has gone rogue, and is attacking the Starjammers’ Captain America.
Wurmser tries to get Hansen’s attention, but the billionaire doesn’t care. Drax readies himself to strike.
Mantis tries to stop Drax, as the Starjammer Cap raises his shield in self-defense. On a nearby rooftop, we see Jean Grey mentally manipulating Drax’s attack. On yet another roof, Emma Frost and Dr. Clark Connors (“played” by an action figure of Sean Connery from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) attempt to divine Jean’s location.
In the Negative Zone, ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Kate Neville still struggles to escape the grip of an Annihilation Reaver. The Super-Skrull and Nihilus ready themselves to fight the Fantastic Four again.
Spider-Man swings through the New York City skyline, en route to the Baxter Building. Outside of the White House, the X-Cutioner shoots and kills several S.H.I.E.L.D. troopers who were set up to snipe him.
The X-Cutioner drops his weapons, as Spider-Man contacts his longtime associate, Dr. Otto Octavius, for help with the situation at the Baxter Building!

If you’re a longtime reader of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, and you’re getting suspicious that I’m trying to pull together nearly every long-dangling plot thread that I can think of into this next arc of the story… Well, I’m going to do my best! My notebook of ideas keeps getting more and more full, and I’d like to get in the habit of concluding some tales before I move on to telling new ones!

(I couldn’t keep myself from introducing new characters, but can you blame me? Dr. Octopus is the antagonist of one of the very greatest – if not still the absolute best – superhero movies ever! I have mentioned my love for Maximum Carnage, if not the Carnage character himself before, and I’ve been trying to figure out a use for his action figure for)

On the subject of longtime readers (who probably won’t need these hyperlinks, but you never know), the opposite side of that coin are new readers! Welcome, if you’re a newcomer, and please feel free to use the links below to get caught up on this installment of the story so far!

  • Part One (wherein we visit the Negative Zone, and New Mexico, and Long Island!)
  • Part Two (wherein terrible foes make a fresh, unwelcome alliance!)
  • Part Three (wherein the Beast and Jocasta both take action!)
  • Part Four (wherein Jocasta escapes, and Kate Neville infiltrates!)
  • Part Five (wherein sides are chosen, and fights are threatened!)
  • Part Six (wherein the President and his rival join the fray, in their own way!)
  • Part Seven (wherein Kirby calls Stryker a creep, and some fights break out, too!)
  • Part Eight (wherein we reach one hundred and fifty comics in the main storyline!)
  • Part Nine (wherein Kate Neville achieves her true form!)
  • Part Ten (wherein the X-Cutioner and HYDRA lay siege to the White House!)
  • Part Eleven (wherein the X-Cutioner faces off with the President!)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
