A lone taxicab speeds through the snowy streets of New York City. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘Somebody is Comin’ to Town’,” is visible at the top of the image.

All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers #73 – ‘Somebody Is Comin’ to Town’

Five entries into the holiday adventure story, and it’s clear that I’m not great at checking my comic plans against a calendar. It’s officially 2023, and this isn’t even the last installment in this tale! I hope you’ve been enjoying reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together, at least. So, Sandman! I…

The Shocker lies in pain on the sidewalk in New York City, trying to catch his breath after Domino shot him with one of her stun bullets in the previous comic strip. He groans, “My small intestine…” (in a quote of a line of Philip J. Fry’s from Futurama) as Miles Morales, in his Spider-Man mask, kneels over him. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘I’m Telling You Why’,” is visible at the top of the image.

I think it’s a rule that, if you’re going to bring the Fabulous Frog-Man into your comic, you have to give him an opportunity to redeem himself and do something legitimately heroic. Like the old, “five reels of vice, the sixth of virtue,” Hollywood rule that I don’t remember well enough to quote exactly, or…

The Shocker poses in front of the HYDRA monster truck, remarking, “Shocking, isn’t it?” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘You Better Not Pout’,” is visible at the top of the image.

I said I was trying to bring things full-circle in this holiday adventure in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe… This week, the return of the grimdark Spider-Man who, clearly, hasn’t dealt with whatever residual trauma he’s still carrying around from the Red Skull’s sneak attack on his No Good, Very Bad Night!…

In front of his monster truck that barricades the holiday streets of New York City, Baron Zemo and one of his HYDRA agents pose intimidatingly. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘You Better Not Cry’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Would superheroes ever make the time to talk, if not for fights against overmatched hordes of enemies? I’m thinking… no. That Baron Zemo – he sure is doing his best Batman ’66 villain impression here, don’t you think? He ordered his henchmen to “leave no witnesses” when he has them get in a fight with…

In downtown New York City, decorated for the holidays, the Fabulous Frog-Man stands at attention, and salutes. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘You Better Watch Out’,” is visible at the top of the image.

I have a long list of ideas for stories I’d like to get around to telling in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe. Two of the earliest entries, which I wrote down before I ever took a single photo for the comic, were “Christmas adventure,” and “Domino and Black Cat good/bad luck powers…

Doctor Doom conjures a web of mystical force before him, in the basement laboratory of his castle. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘’Don’t Lie When You’re Hurting Inside’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Well, we finally made it! The conclusion of my semi-Secret Avengers, mostly Avengers West Coast-inspired incursion into Latveria. I think the Ultron drone had the best line this week with, “Let’s see how difficult it is to cut you open!” Though, the drone and Luis collaborating to name-drop his new superhero code name is a…

The ominous exterior of Castle Doom in Latveria. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘Watching You, Watching You’,” is visible at the top of the image.

I like to think that, in these two latest strips, I’ve really channeled some of the joie de vivre of the Avengers West Coast comics that I love so much (on top of the Secret Avengers hat-tipping). The stakes are still real and high, the villain is about as deadly as you can get, and…

A C-130 transport airplane cruises through the sky, approaching Latverian airspace. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘They See Your Every Move’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Now that we’re wrapped on the Election Season adventure, we can really dig into the extra-legal incursions into Latveria! Hopefully, this team can complete its mission before they beat one another unconscious in the street. It’s probably because of my formative comic-book-buying years, but I’ve always had a soft spot for John Walker, the U.S….

In a dark parking garage, Baron Zemo and his HYDRA agents confront the Black Cat, whom they've apparently been blackmailing to influence the New York mayoral election against her best friend, Domino.

Marvel Short #53 – Election season! (part 13)

Posted on November 11, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede

Welcome to the conclusion (sort of) to the adventure I’ve been calling Election Season! Some best friend Domino has, huh? You knew there were some shady activities afoot, to keep the mayor in his office without him looking like he was breaking a sweat. At least the Fabulous Frog-Man is keeping watch over the city,…

Domino gives Mayor Gruenwald (named for longtime Marvel editor/writer Mark Gruenwald) a video call concession speech. After she hangs up, the Mayor turns to some of the attendees at his victory party: military liaison Major Steinberg (named for comics publisher/Marvel staffer "Fabulous Flo" Steinberg), Justin Hammer ("played" here by an action figure of Jeff Goldblum's character Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park), and a HYDRA agent!

And the mayor’s hell turn really is complete, here! For a hot minute, he seemed like he was mostly okay; at least, he wasn’t turning to the conspiracy theorists for support. You’ve got to wonder what the mayor promised HYDRA for their help in making sure he stayed the mayor, don’t you? We’re so close…

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
