All-New, All-Business Avengers #76 – ‘The Big Fish Eat The Little Ones’

Posted on January 25, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
On an average street in New York City, NYPD Chief Shooter (named for Marvel Comics’ writer/editor-in-chief Jim Shooter) approaches a building described as a, “secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Business Avengers Presents… ‘The Big Fish Eat The Little Ones’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Inside the building, Shooter meets with NYC Mayor Gruenwald (named for Marvel writer/editor Mark Gruenwald) and military liaison Major Steinberg (named for comics’ publisher/longtime Marvel staffer “Fabulous Flo” Steinberg). The mayor doesn’t seem enthusiastic about the meeting.
Major Steinberg encourages the mayor to proceed in good faith, and Shooter tells them they need to take a hidden elevator to reach the heart of the secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.
As the three leaders climb into the secret elevator, the two guards outside of the door remark to one another that they don’t see any point in applying to be proper S.H.I.E.L.D. agents anymore.
The mayor asks what S.H.I.E.L.D. is short for; Major Steinberg replies, “Supreme Homeland Intervention, Executive Law-Enforcement Division.”
Steinberg goes on to explain that S.H.I.E.L.D. is run and accountable only to the President of the United States. Shooter starts to introduce the agents that will make up the secret anti-Avengers team (all of whom are “played” in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe by G.I. JOE Classified series action figures). First up, “Dum Dum” Dugan.
Other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents present include Clay Quartermain, Kate Neville, Charles Little Sky, and the leader of the G.W. Bridge.
The mayor asks what G.W. is short for; Bridge replies, “George Washington,” before complaining to Shooter that he doesn’t like to talk about his name.
Bridge and the mayor proceed to bond over their annoyance with people who don’t take the job of protecting the world seriously (like, say, Tony Stark).
On the top half of the image, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents make small talk with one another. On the bottom half are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I’m always on the lookout for “characters” to add to the case of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe who aren’t standard-issue super-powered people. NECA figures (like the police chief, here) are pretty excellent for this; I’ve sung the praises of the Dr. Who figures that I’ve put in the city and state government before, too. But, I’m really interested in characters who can pose at the same level (or better than) the Marvel Legends that are most of my “cast.”

While I’m not the biggest fan of G.I. JOE, I like to think I can recognize neat action figures when I see them, and these Classified Series action figures are all pretty neat! I’m stoked to find excuses for them to fight the Avengers!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
