At a computer console in the Batcave (a playset of the Batcave from the Batman ’66 TV series), Jean-Paul Valley attempts to type a query, while wearing his full armor Batman costume. “Stupid spike… fingers,” he complains to himself. “They make typing so hard!”

Batman’s Reluctant Team-up!

Posted on June 23, 2023December 23, 2023 by phil.wrede

Sometimes, when drawings make their leap into a 3-D space, they’re a letdown. They lose whatever magic the original illustrations had. That’s absolutely not the case with these Mafex Steel and Knightfall Batman action figures, though! I’m not trying to sound like a shill for a company that makes expensive toys, mind you, but these…

Within the walls of the Vault, the super-prison located in the Rocky Mountains, warden-and-evil-genius Edwin Cord stands opposite his prisoner, the mutant hero Shatterstar, who in the previous comic strip had begun to free himself from Cord’s mind control. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Looking to the Sky to Save Me’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Well, all’s well that ends well, relatively speaking! I mean, we still have to figure out what to do with Cord, and the Controller; they can’t be held at the Vault, or in any conventional prison. What’s X-Force going to do next? Will Cable and Cyclops ever be able to have a real conversation? Then,…

In the main courtyard of the super-prison The Vault, warden-turned-would-be-world-conqueror Edwin Cord stands proudly before the mutant Avenger Shatterstar, whose mind has fallen totally under his control. Across from them stand Shatterstar’s friends and fellow mutants, Domino and Cable, the leaders of the activist group X-Force. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘This One Is a Lie’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Well, here we finally are: the big test! Cord’s mind control held Shatterstar in thrall while he had to split his attention between multiple (friendly) targets, but to focus entirely on one friend? On, arguably, his closest friend? If you’re reading this comic strip, you’ve probably read and/or seen enough science fiction and superhero stories…

Outside of The Vault, the super-prison in the Rocky Mountains, the mutant Avenger Beast shakes his fist in anger, screaming, “Corrddd!” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Watched The Last One Die’,” is visible at the top-left corner of the image.

This fight’s going better for X-Force than it did last time, I think it’s safe to say! Though, it’s when you think you’re doing your best, that’s when the universe sneaks up behind you and pulls the rug out from under your feet! I rather like how the first two images came out, with Beast’s…

Within the walls of The Vault - the super-prison in the Rocky Mountains - the mind-controlled Whirlwind, Thunderstrike, and Darkhawk prepare to fight a combined force of the Avengers and X-Force. Behind them, the Controller watches eagerly. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Hook Me Up A New Revolution’,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.

Cord didn’t have great luck with his horde of faceless flunkies last week; let’s see how he does when he unleashes his named warriors against the combined Avengers/X-Force team! Thunderstrike just can’t catch a break from Dazzler’s light-flaring abilities, can he?

Outside a bar in Naples, Italy, in 1934, Caroline Collette (“played” by an action figure of Cover Girl from the G.I. JOE series) approaches and shouts, “Jones! We have a lead!” The title of this comic strip, “Indiana Jones and the Talaria of Mercury,” is visible at the top of the image.

I didn’t start buying these new Indiana Jones action figures with the intention of making an Indiana Jones toy comic; I bought them because they looked awesome. It was when I was sorting through action figures, and arranging a better storage solution for them, that I happened to put Indy down next to Cover Girl…

The combined X-Force and Avengers team - the Beast, Domino, Cable, Colossus, and Red Guardian - approaches the borders of the infamous super-prison The Vault, in the Rocky Mountains. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Help Me Get Things Right’,” is visible at the top of the image.

The big, multi-week fight starts here! I know I’ve done a few of these before, but this should give the biggest ones in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe a run for their money! This is, after all, the culmination of a struggle that began over a year-and-a-half ago, when Thor dropped the…

1. Beyond the perimeter of The Vault, Cable and Dazzler stand in a field in the Rocky Mountains. Cable holds a finger to his ear, as though he’s receiving a call. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ’This Could Take All Night’,” is visible at the top of the image.

This team-up mission gets even further overstuffed, with the reveal of the X-Force recon squad! And, the return of Domino! The Vault isn’t going to know what hit it!

In a field outside of the The Vault prison in the Rocky Mountains, Wolverine, Sunspot, Warpath, Dazzler, and Cable stand like they’re waiting for something. Wolverine, in particular, is looking up into the sky. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Run and Tell All of the Angels’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Now that Spider-Man’s been freed from the clutches of his own inner demons (for now), the Avengers and X-Force can finally dig into the family bucket-sized problem that is Edwin Cord and his mind-controlled army! That is, if the two teams can stop chatting each other up, and get down to business…

Iron Man leads Miles Morales (in his Spider-Man mask) and the Fabulous Frog-Man down the halls of Avengers Tower. Iron Man says, “Thanks for coming, guys.” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Back-in-Black Avengers Presents… ‘Yes I’m Back’,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.

After all the drama from Spider-Man’s No Good, Very Bad Night: the shooting, the treatment, the trauma-induced costume change, the savage beatings… We wound up back in Avengers Tower, with Spider-Man putting on a black costume. He sure loves that black costume! But, we did get a peek under his mask. We’re the only ones…

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
