All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers #72 – ‘I’m Telling You Why’

Posted on December 28, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
The Shocker lies in pain on the sidewalk in New York City, trying to catch his breath after Domino shot him with one of her stun bullets in the previous comic strip. He groans, “My small intestine…” (in a quote of a line of Philip J. Fry’s from Futurama) as Miles Morales, in his Spider-Man mask, kneels over him. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Seasonal Avengers Presents… ‘I’m Telling You Why’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Baron Zemo drives away from the site of his most recent defeat in his monster truck, but as Domino and the Black Cat watch his retreat, they fail to immediately notice the Hobgoblin swoop out of the sky on his personal glider.
The Hobgoblin quips like a failed stand-up comedian, as he pulls a pumpkin-shaped bomb out of his satchel. Domino and Black Cat run for cover.
The snow begins to fall as the first bomb explodes just behind Domino and the Black Cat. The Hobgoblin complains about how his audience didn’t appreciate him, and the Black Cat argues back that he just wasn’t funny.
The Hobgoblin throws another pumpkin bomb toward the ground, and it explodes nearer our heroes this time. Black Cat doesn’t stop arguing with him, however.
As the Hobgoblin swoops in for what he thinks is the killing blow, he’s surprised by a voice from out of nowhere, crying out, “That’s one giant leap for - !”
“Justice!” the Fabulous Frog-Man shouts, as he delivers a double punch into the Hobgoblin’s chest, knocking the villain off his glider. As he falls, the Hobgoblin shouts, “Cancelled again!”
Frog-Man catches the Hobgoblin just before he hits the street, but the Hobgoblin slips out of Frog-Man’s grip, and he falls the remaining few feet, anyway.
Domino and the Black Cat thank Frog-Man for coming back to help them, before hailing the lone remaining taxicab in New York, to finally escape this battle.
On the top half of the image, Domino and the Black Cat ask the taxi driver how quickly he can get to Avengers Tower. The cabbie, Ron Jomita (named after legendary Marvel Comics creator/artist, Jon Romita), tells them he’ll get them there as fast as they want, if Tony Stark pays his speeding tickets. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I think it’s a rule that, if you’re going to bring the Fabulous Frog-Man into your comic, you have to give him an opportunity to redeem himself and do something legitimately heroic. Like the old, “five reels of vice, the sixth of virtue,” Hollywood rule that I don’t remember well enough to quote exactly, or even Google correctly. If it’s not a rule, it probably should be!

Most every character, I give their dialogue two passes, to try and tighten it up as well as I can, but with Frog-Man, I completely indulge myself and let my instincts rule the day, writing his dialogue. You can probably tell that I, more or less, let him write himself.

One of the fun things about building a body of work is getting to look back and discover patterns and routines you fell into, without even recognizing it; hopefully it’s fun, at least, and not paralyzingly embarrassing. As I was writing the alt text for this strip, it occurred to me that I’ve borrowed, “I can’t stand it!” from Peanuts at least twice now. I wonder what I’ll notice I’ve done next!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
