All-New, All-Discrete Avengers #68 – ‘Don’t Lie When You’re Hurting Inside’

Posted on November 30, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Doctor Doom conjures a web of mystical force before him, in the basement laboratory of his castle. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘’Don’t Lie When You’re Hurting Inside’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Doom casts spell upon spell to tear Luis’ humanity from the rest of his life force, but all it seems to be doing is tormenting Luis. Tigra pleads for Doom to stop, while Jocasta argues that humanity may be what finally frees her from her creator’s influence, once and for all.
As Luis is wrapped in fresh, horrible magic energy, U.S. Agent looks around the rooftop of Castle Doom, until he is set upon by one of the Ultron drones that Doctor Doom has pressed into his service as security.
U.S. Agent throws his mighty shield at the Ultron drone, but the android catches it before it can strike. In the basement lab, Jocasta, moved by Tigra’s plea, attempts to stop Doom’s spell with her own magic.
Doom strikes Jocasta down before she can finish casting her spell, but it’s too late. The two magical energies begin to permeate Luis’ molecular structure simultaneously, causing unanticipated results. Jocasta and Doom begin to fight.
The Secret Avengers - Iron Fist, Spider-Woman, Deathlok, and U.S. Agent try to bring down the Ultron drone, but none of their attacks even stagger it.
A strange new blue energy overwhelms Luis, and a loud crack of thunder is heard as his body becomes supercharged with a mysterious energy.
The Ultron drone, enraged by the Avengers, releases a burst of its own energy, knocking the heroes all back.
Blue energy bursts from beneath Castle Doom, distracting the Ultron drone. It remarks that the energy “is almost like living…” before Luis streaks down out of the sky and blasts the drone into submission with energy that resembles, in his own word, “Lightning!” Going forward, Luis’ superhero codename will be “the Living Lightning.”
At the top of the image, back at Avengers Tower, after the battle has been concluded, Jocasta and the newly-super Luis stand in front of Tony Stark. He’s amazed that Doom allowed them to leave. Luis explains that Doom thought he was a disappointing creation, although Luis disagrees with that description. At the bottom of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Well, we finally made it! The conclusion of my semi-Secret Avengers, mostly Avengers West Coast-inspired incursion into Latveria. I think the Ultron drone had the best line this week with, “Let’s see how difficult it is to cut you open!” Though, the drone and Luis collaborating to name-drop his new superhero code name is a little moment I’m pretty proud of.

Speaking of Luis… A little context:

From about issue #69-74 of AWC, our favorite band of misfit heroes were taking on a group of villains called the Pacific Overlords. The Overlords recruited into their ranks one Miguel Santos, who had a deep family connection to an organization called the Legion of the Living Lightning, and who developed his own electrical-based powers as a result of probing that heritage. He eventually figured out he’d picked the wrong side in the battle of Overlords Vs. Avengers, and for a while afterward, became an Avenger himself.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Living Lightning, and making Luis the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe’s version of him was that long-term goal I’ve been talking about for him. My somewhat relentless talk about the AWC might have given the long game away, but maybe it didn’t! I don’t know how many people consider the Pacific Overlords story a seminal one in their comics experience.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
