All-New, All-Business Avengers #77 – ‘Has the Light Gone Out for You?’

Posted on February 1, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Thor and War Machine race through the sky, toward the Vault. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Business Avengers Presents… ‘Has the Light Gone Out for You?’,” is visible at the top of the image.
They land out of range of the Vault’s security system.
Thor and War Machine’s conversation is interrupted by the arrival of the Leader!
The Avengers discuss what to do with their adversary; the Leader offers to take them to a place where they can safely observe what is going on in the prison.
War Machine threatens the Leader with violence, if he’s leading them into a trap, and the Leader argues that, if he’s affecting the heroes’ minds, there would be no way for them to know what’s real or fake, until it’s too late.
Warden of the Vault, Edwin Cord (who is “played” in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe by an action figure of Mr. Hammond, from Jurassic Park), stands before the small army of prisoners and Vault Guardsmen whose minds he now controls.
Cord brings out the Controller, who he declares will lead his parade of “little fleas” (a reference to Mr. Hammond’s story about his flea circus attraction from Jurassic Park) in their attack on the world.
Thor and War Machine decide they need to report back to the rest of the Avengers; the Leader attempts to leave their company.
The superheroine Darkstar approaches from her hiding place, and stuns the Leader into unconsciousness.
On the top half of the image, the Leader awakens, with War Machine’s wrist-mounted gun shoved in his face. They’re aboard a speedboat that’s being piloted by Darkstar, as Thor flies alongside. War Machine encourages the Leader to relax, because the trip will take a while. On the bottom half are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

It didn’t take long for the Avengers to respond to the distress call from the Vault, did it? Certainly, a better response time than I was able to manage in keeping up with the activity of Edwin Cord and his unwilling army in 2022!

Now, strictly speaking, the Leader was never imprisoned in the Vault; he escaped capture when the Avengers raided the secret A.I.M. facility back in 2021, you may recall. But, there are so many villains! Certainly, more than any two heroes can be expected to keep track of!

This marks Darkstar’s jump into the main storyline of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, for those of you interested that kind of thing.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
