All-New, All-Remote Avengers #25 – ‘Speed Through the Finish’

Posted on June 17, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
"Somewhere upstate..." (per the location caption at the bottom right corner of the image), Iron Man awakens, surrounded by Prince T'Challa of Wakanda (the Black Panther), Shatterstar, Spider-Woman, War Machine, and Domino. He asks them, "Where did The Leader go?" The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Speed Through the Finish'," is visible at the top of the page.
War Machine and Domino try to explain to Iron Man that when he thought he was fighting The Leader, that he wasn't, but Iron Man doesn't understand their vague descriptions of what happened.
Iron Man demands that War Machine stream the video of the not-exactly-a-fight to his armor's computer, and War Machine reluctantly complies. In a flashback, Iron Man sees the embarrassing actions that he was forced to take while under control of The Leader's mental powers.
Totally humiliated, Iron Man checks social media, and sees that the video is... trending.
In a fit of extreme annoyance, Iron Man mentally commands his armor to disassemble and power down, revealing that the person inside the Iron Man suit is actually... Tony Stark!
Everybody pretends that they didn't know Tony Stark was Iron Man the whole time, while Stark approaches Prince T'Challa to offer to sell the rights to the Avengers to Wakanda's king, T'Chaka!
Stark promises T'Challa that his lawyers will contact Wakanda's lawyers, and then declares that it's time for him to take a vacation.
A Tesla convertible drives up from down a dusty road, and as Stark hops in the driver's seat, he declares that he's going to, "that country only rich people know about" (referencing a line from Season 2, Episode 1 of 30 Rock, "Seinfeldvision"), and asks that nobody come visit him while he's away.
As the Tesla drives away, Domino and War Machine observe that they think it's weird how Tony Stark wasn't picked up by one of his own brand of self-driving electric cars. Out of earshot, Stark remarks to himself that he would, actually, like for his teammates to visit him at his vacation home.

Part 8 of the big A.I.M. base assault! The end, it’s here! Not that I want it to be over, but the machinations of The Leader and his crew of pawns are definitely reaching their logical conclusion (for now). If you’re starting your adventures in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe today, welcome, and here’s a handy list of links to get yourself caught up on this particular tale:

Iron Man didn’t really think The Leader was going to stand toe-to-toe with him and have a straight-up fight, did he? The Leader did what he always does: toy with his foes, and escape until he decides to reappear!

Regardless, this is a big day for Tony Stark, here – formally revealing his dual identity as Iron Man to some of his fellow heroes, and turning over control of the Avengers organization that he fought so hard to maintain not all that long ago! Just like The Leader, though, Tony knows that sometimes it’s better to regroup, and rejoin the fight another day, than it is to refuse to stop, and drive yourself (and your audience!) into exhaustion.

(This was also the best way I could think to work that 30 Rock reference – “that country only rich people know about” – into Tony’s dialogue, which I’d been hoping to find a way to do, pretty much since I began working on this comic.)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
