All-New, All-Multiversal Avengers #83 – ‘Could You Take My Picture?’

Posted on March 15, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Through a portal that leads to an Alternate Earth, Wong and Dr. Strange step through, bravely. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Multiversal Avengers Presents… ‘Could You Take My Picture?’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Wong suggests the two of them get out of the city street into which they’ve stepped, but Strange sees something down the way.
A car with the license plate, “THWIP1,” approaches at a high rate of speed. Wong summons the Green Destiny sword, in case trouble is within that car. Strange asks if that’s the name of the sword from the movie ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’
As the car screeches to a halt before Wong and Strange, we see that it is, indeed, the Spider-Mobile, being driven by this Earth’s Spider-Man, who goes by the name Spider-Protector (and is “played” by the Japanese Spider-Man action figure).
Spider-Protector leaps out of his car, declaring that he’s identified Wong and Strange as intruders from a parallel reality.
Wong and Strange try to explain who they are, and where they’ve come from.
Spider-Protector takes off his mask to reveal that he’s this Earth’s version of Agent Jimmy Woo from the MCU. He’s worried that Wong and Strange have evil intentions, despite their declarations otherwise.
Spider-Protector tries to take Wong and Strange into custody, in his capacity as a superhero and an FBI agent, but Wong and Strange summon portals to help them escape.
Spider-Protector replaces his mask, and starts talking to himself about how to begin his report about this incident. He proposes the phrase, “It was raining in the city by the bay. A hard rain. Hard enough to wash the slime…” which is a quote of dialogue from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, ‘The Big Goodbye.’
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Not content with juggling the storylines about a S.H.I.E.L.D.-napped Moon Knight, and Edwin Cord’s plot to take over the world, and the grudge the Mayor of NYC holds against the Avengers, I’ve decided to take a detour from all of these ongoing stories this week, to follow Dr. Strange and Wong on their visit to a parallel Earth! Welcome to the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic… Multiverse!

Just like his fellow Ant-Man-movie costar Luis, I’ve felt like Jimmy Woo deserved to be able to do bigger and better things than crack jokes off to the side of the action. I’ve been a fan of Randall Park’s ever since that guest appearance he did on The Office; he’s usually the best (or at least one of the best) parts of anything he’s in. When the Jimmy Woo action figure got announced, I knew he’d at least have a chance to shine in my toy comic!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
