All-New, All-Business Avengers #80 – ‘Keep Fading, Keep Shining On’

Posted on February 22, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
The S.H.I.E.L.D. hit squad (“Dum Dum” Dugan, G.W. Bridge, Charles Little Sky, and Kate Neville) dramatically pose in front of their standard-issue S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicle, a Basic Assault Transport. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Business Avengers Presents… ‘Keep Fading, Keep Shining On’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Spider-Woman dives at Kate Neville, just as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent’s guns jam.
Spider-Woman punches Kate hard enough to send her flying, as Moon Knight angrily explains how difficult it is to get his Mr. Knight outfit clean enough for date night.
As Moon Knight advances on G.W. Bridge, he’s hit by a grenade launched by Charles Little Sky, and knocked completely off his feet.
Moon Knight struggles to his feet, and is met by “Dum Dum” Dugan, holding a shotgun to his head. Suddenly, the shotgun’s engulfed by Spider-Woman’s webbing.
Spider-Woman yanks Dugan off his feet.
G.W. Bridge shoots Spider-Woman in the back with bullets from his magnum revolver before she can beat Dugan up any more.
Moon Knight viciously attacks Bridge, but Neville and Little Sky focus their gunfire on him, knocking him to the ground once again.
Before Spider-Woman can do anything about it, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents bind Moon Knight to their vehicle, and drive off with him in custody.
On the top half of the image, Jocasta and Kate Bishop emerge, responding to Moon Knight’s SOS. On the bottom half are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I didn’t run a statistical analysis, or anything, but it feels like the Avengers almost always come out on top in a fight in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe. That’s not surprising, but after a certain point, it’s probably not all that exciting, either. When I was planning out this portion of the story, I thought there was a good opportunity to push back against that trend, even just a little bit. S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn’t go after any Avenger, unless they had a good shot at taking that Avenger down!

It’s not just the G.I.-JOEs-as-S.H.I.E.L.D.-agents who’re making appearances from other action figure lines, today! What Spider-Woman referred to as the “Basic Assault Transport” – the S.H.I.E.L.D. monster truck – in the last installment is the “Batmobeast*” from the McFarlane Toys’ DC Multiverse series. There aren’t that many affordably-priced vehicles that scale, more or less, with 6″ action figures, so I’ll take ones where I can get them! See, also, the speedboat from the Fortnite toy line that carried the Leader partway back to NYC from a few weeks ago.

*I have to admit that I am not anywhere close to current with the last 10 or so years of Marvel or DC comic event crossovers, so when I read up on the Batmobeast, I was.. kind of blown away.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
