All-New, Overworked Avengers #49 – ‘Better Get Out’

Posted on March 30, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
A Vault Guardsman leads Whirlwind, Klaw, and an agent of Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) through the tunnels leading outside of The Vault. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Better Get Out’,” is visible at the top of the image.
The escaping party cheers how clever they were, in breaking out during the attempted breakout.
The A.I.M. agent observes that they seemed to be able to escape pretty easily, while Whirlwind and Klaw are annoyed by this.
They demand the Guardsman reveal his true identity, and he agrees.
Spymaster reveals himself underneath the holographic disguise of the Guardsman.
Spymaster tells them that he was, indeed, leading them to The Leader, beyond the walls of The Vault.
Out in the fresh air, beyond the tunnels, they discuss how effective The Vault’s climate controlling force fields were.
The Leader joins them, declaring his intentions to take over the world have not changed.
Cord’s programming takes over Klaw, Whirlwind, and the A.I.M. agent, and they attack Spymaster and the Leader.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Welcome back to Part 4 of X-Force’s Assault on the Vault, and the conclusion, for now.. In Part 3, of course, we learned that a few of the Vault’s villainous prisoners had managed to break out* during the commotion. You didn’t have to be an eagle-eyed reader to guess who’d escaped, but I hope this strip was a fun read, nevertheless!

If you’d like to go back to Part 2 and Part 1 of this story, well, I’d love for you to do that, too!

I’m sure it’s not a shocking revelation to learn that I often put little “jokes” in the comic strip for which I alone am the intended audience. In this comic, it’s the sound effect & remark made by the A.I.M. agent in reaction to Spymaster’s turning off of his holographic disguise. It’s my inelegant tip of the hat to one of my favorite lines in Galaxy Quest, after Laliari reveals her true form to Fred Kwan, and they make out (and probably more) on the deck of the NESA Protector, to which Guy Fleegman remarks… Well, it’s what the A.I.M. agent says.

*Hey, I finally referenced the name of the Foo Fighters song from which I took the lyrics to make the title of each installment of the story!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
