All-New, Overworked Avengers #57 – ‘Somewhere I Belong’

Posted on July 20, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
Tony Stark and Mayor Gruenwald of New York City (named for longtime Marvel comics editor/writer Mark Gruenwald) talk before their video conference meeting officially begins. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Somewhere I Belong’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
The Mayor and Stark are joined by the military’s liaison to the New York City government, Major Steinberg (named after comics publisher/longtime Marvel staffer “Fabulous Flo” Steinberg) and New York state’s Lieutenant Governor Gerber (named after Marvel comics writer Steve Gerber) to discuss what they call “the Avengers question.”
The Mayor proposes a new chairman for the Avengers, Captain America. Cap and Major Steinberg get in an argument because they apparently both have the same virtual background.
As the argument heats up, a couple of New York City residents join the call: Audrey and Gordon Tator, who have been present in previous installments of this comic as both the people harassing the food truck operators in the NYC park, and leading the protest against the Avengers from across the street.
Stark notices that the Tators have used the official Avengers typeface to make the slogans on their own virtual background, and he promises legal action, if it turns out they didn’t license the font properly.
Justin Hammer, now, joins the call, and reveals to Stark that his company, Hammer Industries, paid to license the font on the Tators’ behalf. Tony can’t believe what he’s hearing.
As Cap weighs in on behalf of the abstract principles of public service, the Mayor declares that he invited one more surprise guest to the conversation…
…the President of the United States! President Kirby (named for iconic comics’ creator Jack “the King” Kirby, and “played” by an action figure of Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise).
President Kirby declares that he wants the Avengers to appear more publicly deferential to him, so that the American people know who really runs the country.
On the top half of the image, President Kirby and Justin Hammer make one more smart-aleck remark, each, before signing off. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

This is kind of a mess of a meeting, here, but that’s what you get when the people running it are operating at cross purposes!

I am thrilled, however, to finally get to introduce the President of the United States of America in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe. I’ve had my eye on this particular “performer” in this role for a long time, and it thrills me to bring his unique energy to these stories. The cast just keeps expanding!

Admittedly, it’s a lot harder to cast a real actor than it is to go out and buy an action figure, but I feel you should take the joys in life where you can find them, large or small.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
