All-New, Rebranded Avengers #28 – ‘Meet the New Boss’

Posted on July 8, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Domino, an NYPD officer, and the Mayor of New York City are visible on a video call at the top half of the image. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Meet the New Boss’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
After Shatterstar’s lethal takedown of the captive Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) agent in the last strip, Domino has had to organize an emergency conference call with Avengers HR, the NYPD, and the Mayor’s office, due to the complexities of the legal framework allowing the Avengers to operate within the city, and without.
With the new “ownership” of the Avengers held by the Wakandan royal family, it’s determined that Prince T’Challa needs to be in attendance in the call, as well.
The NYPD demands that they be allowed into the Avengers tower, to take Shatterstar into custody, pending an investigation into the incident.
The Mayor is finally about to join the call. Also, this image marks the first appearance of the "PizzaRatNet" graphic image that would, eventually, become the logo for this website.
The Mayor goes on to say that all Avengers now need to be registered with the city government as agents of Wakanda.
T’Challa agrees, on the condition that all American agents operating within Wakanda disclose their identities to him. The Mayor doesn’t take the bait T’Challa offers him, but does declare that military police will be arriving to take custody of Shatterstar.
The military liaison to the mayor’s office lays out the plan for Shatterstar’s custody, and before any follow-up questions can be asked, both the liaison and the Mayor depart from the call.
Domino and Beast both express their disappointment with how the call went.

There were probably a solid five minutes where Domino was actually excited to take over as the chairperson of the Avengers, before she realized how many meetings Iron Man held that she didn’t want to attend, and how many more meetings she didn’t have to attend. Video meetings with HR, and the police, and the mayor’s office sound like a brutal activity by themselves, but all of them, together, simultaneously?! Good night, indeed.

It took a lot of time, hunting around for the right action figures to fill out the supporting cast of characters (besides the Avengers and their adversaries). There aren’t many great “regular people”-type action figures, or at least it took a while for me to figure out how to search for them, anyway.

One day, I’m not sure how I did it, but I found a small cache of Dr. Who-related action figures being sold on eBay, with Peter Capaldi, Elisabeth Sladen, and some more (who have yet to appear in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, so I don’t want to ruin the surprise, for anybody who might be excited to be surprised by the “roles” they play). I’m not a huge Dr. Who fan, personally, but if you can manufacture yourself the opportunity to stick Peter Capaldi into the gears of government once again, I figure you should take advantage of that opportunity.

Also, working in supporting characters like these let me name the characters after people in comics whose work has meant a lot to me, and so I’m glad to get to participate in that great, grand tradition of name tributes, here!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
