All-New, All-Remote Avengers #20 – ‘Churning and Burning’

Posted on May 13, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Klaw holds his pistol in his left hand, taunting Prince T'Challa of Wakanda, the Black Panther. The title of this comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Churning and Burning'," is present at the bottom of the page.
T'Challa declares that he's going to stop Klaw once and for all. Klaw finds a way to quote the title of Pearl Jam's song, 'Better Man.' He also refers to T'Challa as, "Nephew," to emphasize the strong connection he believes he has to Wakanda (from all the battles he has fought against its people).
Klaw reveals his sonic cannon, hidden in his prosthetic left arm.
T'Challa throws a spear, and it impacts Klaw's sonic cannon.
The force of the spear's impact tears Klaw's prosthetic arm off at the elbow.
Klaw still won't back down from the fight, so T'Challa leaps at him.
T'Challa tackles Klaw, and drives him to the floor.
Klaw says something vague and mysterious about crimes Wakanda has committed in the past, but T'Challa will hear nothing of it, and leaps in the air to fall upon Klaw once again.
As T'Challa beats Klaw into unconsciousness, he quotes lyrics from Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd's song 'Pray for Me' from the Black Panther movie soundtrack.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Welcome to Part 3 of the big A.I.M. base assault! See Part 1 and Part 2 here, if you like!

There’s nothing that I can write about Chadwick Boseman that hasn’t already been written or said, better than I can write or say it. I hope that, in my little corner of the internet, that I show respect to his performance of T’Challa, and that I can continue to find ways for the Black Panther to say and do awesome and insightful things.

On a much lighter note, I said that I had Klaw reference ‘It’s Raining Men’ in his first appearance in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe because of the little conversation Klaw and Everett Ross had in the first Black Panther about the mixtape he may or may not have been releasing. However, I really had Klaw reference ‘It’s Raining Men’ because, for one episode of The Simpsons (Season 6, Episode 11, “Fear of Flying”) that the song is Homer Simpson’s favorite song, and I physically cannot help myself from making as many Simpsons references as possible. However, I liked how that one song title reference turned out, and made it a priority to have Klaw make other song references, when possible. I thought it was a fun way to put a button on that character trait, by having T’Challa reference the lyrics of a song from the Black Panther soundtrack as he finished beating Klaw unconscious here, but the mileage you get from that joke may vary.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
