All-New, All-Remote Avengers #18 – ‘Reluctantly Crouched at the Starting Line’

Posted on April 29, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Man clings to a high ceiling corner, muttering to himself, "What sort of mess did you get yourself into this time, Spidey?" The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Reluctantly Crouched at the Starting Line'," is visible in the bottom-left corner of the image. The location caption reads, "Somewhere upstate..."
The supervillain Whirlwind and a faceless agent of Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) walk the hallway below Spider-Man, chatting idly about the faceless agent's kid's school play.
Their conversation is interrupted by a loud noise from outside.
Other A.I.M. agents run frantically through the hallway, screaming vaguely and ominously about something outside.
The outside wall of the hallway explodes, and as the smoke and fire clear...
The former Avengers Domino, War Machine, Spider-Woman, and Prince T'Challa of Wakanda, the Black Panther, storm into the building.
Spider-Man cheers, "The Avengers!" as the various heroes remind one another of what their specific tasks on this mission are.
Spider-Man decides to follow Spider-Woman on her assignment, as the former Avengers split up to divide and conquer the A.I.M. facility.
Domino faces off against the A.I.M. agent and Whirlwind, with whom she's still furious because of his attack on NYC.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Here we are, the beginning of the big A.I.M base assault!

Originally, I posted the comics in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe to Instagram, and so the formatting and page count of many of these comics was done to fit the Instagram limitations.* So, numerous large-scale fight scenes are done over multiple posts, as I could only fit 10 images into a single post on Instagram, and half-to-a-full one of those images needed to be given over to a credits page.

What we have in this comic are a lot of pretty “classic” examples of Phil Wrede writing tropes: very specific references to literature/film/music that I love, sudden explosions, low-level flunkies expressing tremendous regret about their life choices… It’s very fun when the images and the dialogue flow naturally – as anybody who does anything creative will probably tell you about their own work – and it almost makes the days when creating is a terrible slog worthwhile.

*I’ve found many of the native Instagram limitations useful in focusing my comic-making, so I’ll likely hew closely to them in the future, but it’s nice to have the option to break them for dramatic/visual affect when necessary.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
