All-New, All-Remote Avengers #22 – ‘Muscle for Rank’

Posted on May 27, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Man and Spider-Woman dramatically swing on their webs through the Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) facility. The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Muscle for Rank'," is visible on the bottom of the page.
Both Spider-Man and Spider-Woman take out A.I.M. agents from behind.
Spider-Man goes to look for, and finds, J. Jonah Jameson, who has been held captive by A.I.M. Spider-Woman offers to hold off any other enemies that might come their way.
Spider-Man and Jonah argue, while Spider-Woman keeps up her fight.
While Spider-Man and Jonah's argument shows no signs of tiring, Spider-Woman is getting a little tired of her own fights. Jonah accuses Spider-Man of being in league with The Leader, and Spider-Man spits back, "I am exclusively in league with justice!" in a small hat-tip to DC Comics' Justice League.
Jonah throws multiple contradictory accusations at Spider-Man.
Spider-Woman sees a break in the advancing A.I.M. agents, and orders Spider-Man to rescue Jonah, and escape.
Spider-Man webs the uncooperative Jonah up.
Jonah's mouth covered by some webbing, Spider-Man swings away, carrying the Daily Bugle's editor-in-chief behind him.
On the top half of the page, Spider-Woman takes a break from the fight, while Spymaster slips away, unseen. In the bottom half of the page are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Part 5 of the big A.I.M. base assault – it begins, here! Read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 here, if you like!

It took a good long while for the ideal adversaries, Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson, to meet in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, but like every time I find an excuse to write JJJ into my comic, it was an experience of pure joy for me, from start to finish. Spider-Man’s attempts at acting in good faith, and Jonah’s innate inability to accept that he might not be feigning that good faith, makes for a perfect character pairing; there’s a reason creators have been mining gold from that relationship for decades!

I don’t want to count Spider-Woman out here, either. Julia Carpenter’s been a favorite Marvel character of mine from the minute I found out about her association with Denver, Colorado. There aren’t many heroes who call my hometown their home, too, after all! I’ve modified her power set in my comics to be slightly more in line with Spider-Man’s, mostly so I can show her swinging on a web from time to time (who wouldn’t want to swing on a web?). She gets to kick some butt here, too, which might not be the most sophisticated adventure she’s ever gone on, but sometimes, a hero just needs to kick a few villains around!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
