All-New, Rebranded Avengers #26 – ‘Get Out of Town’

Posted on June 24, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
"Still Upstate..." (per the location caption), an agent of Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.), Klaw, and Whirlwind wait with their hands cuffed behind their backs.Well, Klaw has one hand cuffed; his artificial left arm is disconnected from his body. The A.I.M. agent remarks, "This sucks." The title of the comic strip, "All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents... 'Get Out of Town'," is visible at the top of the image.
The A.I.M. agent laments the bad decisions that have led him to this place, while Shatterstar directs the three captive villains down to the prison bus waiting just down the road.
As they pass, the captives all ask Shatterstar questions. The A.I.M. agent asks if there's an appeals process for his capture. Klaw takes the opportunity to reference the lyrics to John Denver's song, "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Whirlwind threatens Shatterstar.
As they reach the front of the bus, the captive villains see that Thor is the one driving the bus. In the background of the action, Spider-Woman wonders where J. Jonah Jameson went, as he had recently been a captive of A.I.M.
Spider-Man admits that Jonah stole his phone and called a car with it. He never gave the phone back, but Spider-Man isn't worried, because it's his "work" phone for superheroics, and has no identifying information on it.
King T'Chaka of Wakanda, the Black Panther and new owner of the Avengers, offers Domino and War Machine their membership in the organization back. In fact, T'Chaka wants to make Domino the leader of the Avengers!
Domino doesn't know what to think about this offer, but their conversation is interrupted when another A.I.M. agent emerges from a mysterious place, and attacks Shatterstar with a handgun!
Shatterstar moves past the A.I.M. agent's attack, and before anyone can move or say anything, Shatterstar slides around and stabs the attacking agent through the chest with both of his swords.
As the prison bus drives away, nobody can react quickly enough to make a difference, and the A.I.M. agent dies on the ground.

It’s officially a wrap on the A.I.M. base adventure today, and with this ordeal concluded, we’re giving the name of the comic strip a little refresh, too! The Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe is still the same wild place it’s always been, just with a slightly different title on the first comic page! And, a new Avengers leader! See, Domino? Sometimes the good luck power takes a little while to pay off!

In this next storyarc, I wanted to try to include a story about a superhero who makes a snap decision, and a bad one, and I feel like this action of Shatterstar’s qualifies? He’s a high-level warrior, with reflexes trained to the peak of perfection. So, when he’s threatened, his reactions might be more… substantial than the threat really deserves. Especially, when he’s being threatened by an exhausted A.I.M. agent, who only took the job with A.I.M. because he needed some quick cash, received no weapons training, and probably can’t even see out of his mask properly!

It’s not easy, striving to strike a balance between the tragedy and the comedy of super-powered people bumping into the lives of regular folks, all while trying to tell these stories with action figures, but, you know, at least I’m aiming high, here!

Also, when do you think Thor had time to learn how to drive a bus?

In case you’re just joining our adventures currently in progress, here’s a handy-dandy link to the start of the storyarc I’m just wrapping (and, welcome)!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
