On a video call, Domino and War Machine call Iron Man out for his performance in the previous comic strip's battle. The title of the strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'The Evil Has Landed'," is visible in the bottom-left corner of the image.

The Leader’s doomed-from-the-start bombing of the video call was a moment I’d had in my head since the early days of this storyline. The fact that he kidnapped the least tech-savvy, least cinematically-fluent internet personality that he could find – J. Jonah Jameson – was the icing on the cake of this failed moment of…

Over a video call, Hawkeye and Thor discuss the finer points of a pizza recipe that Thor shared.

Marvel Short #10 – Asgardian Pizza

I feel like it’s an unspoken (until now, anyway) rule of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe that everybody likes pizza. No matter what word in your language you have for it, or the ingredients you prefer atop it, the food dish that is pizza has a galactic, universal, multiversal appeal!

A helicopter approaches the Daily Bugle building, as seen in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Take My Breath Away'," is visible on the left side of the page.

I may be a little too pleased with how this comic turned out, but at the time I completed it, it was probably my favorite one, to date. Everything just came together, from the character poses, to the dialogue (Jonah and The Leader did a surprisingly good job of bouncing off each other), and the…

Thor and Captain Marvel orbit over a dying star in outer space. Captain Marvel asked Thor to come along with her on this mission, to restart this star.

Marvel Short #9 – The Marvel-ous Thor

Briefly, I really enjoyed Thor and Captain Marvel’s interactions in Endgame. I wanted more of them, and I wanted a way to use some of the amazing stellar photography that NASA and JPL make available on their websites, so this strip basically wrote itself, once I started posing the characters together.

Iron Man flies above the New York City streets, and asks the question, "Say that again, Bruce?" The title of the comic, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'We Used to be Friends'," is visible at the top of the page.

I really liked Domino in Deadpool 2, but when I started this comic project, I would not have predicted that she’d have become such a major player in my stories. Obviously, Zazie Beetz perfectly played Domino’s exasperation with the stupid situations unspooling around her in Deadpool 2; if there’s a single character from the Fox…

Thor leaves his pet dog, Tanngrisnir, in the care of the Black Widow while he has to leave the planet on a mission. He plays fetch with the dog by throwing his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, and the dog releases a huge charge of electricity as it chases after Mjolnir.

My wife has been just exceedingly supportive of my allowing this toy comic hobby to consume my spare time, to the point of finding and buying interesting little accessories for me to include. She bought me the little toy dog that became Tanngrisnir, and the second I opened the box that the toy was housed…

Shuri, Princess of Wakanda, and her father, King T'Chaka, walk the streets of New York City. She inquires, "Father, I thought you said Thor agreed to come." The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Thievery Corporation'," is visible at the top of the page.

One of the tossed-off lines in the MCU that’s always going to stick with me is when, in the first Avengers movie, Tony Stark remarks that he’s, “kind of the only name in clean energy right now.” The MCU never really returned to that idea, at all, and I really wish it had. I get…

On a video call, Thor and Rage discuss whether or not a god-like physique is necessary for fighting crime. Humans and near-ageless space aliens have different opportunities, not to mention demands on their time!

Marvel Short #7 – Body Image Issues

I remember when Fat Thor made his first appearance in Endgame, and for just a moment, I felt more seen by the MCU than ever before. I am certainly not the star of an action movie franchise, but I am a cisgendered, straight white guy, so I’ve never really hurt for representation in media. I’m…

Iron Man, on a video call, declares, "To be an Avenger, it's no small thing. It means you can be trusted, anywhere, by anyone." The title of the comic strip, "All-New, All-Remote Avengers Presents... 'Dooby Doo Down Down'," is visible at the top of the page.

So, given how emphatically certain Avengers make their case for their politics and worldview, it’s probably no surprise that I, personally (mostly) share that worldview. However, the infighting and interpersonal drama that so define the Avengers doesn’t work if only one side gets to consistently make their argument, and that’s kind of where this strip…

Thor and Wolverine enjoy cold glasses of beer in a lounge area of the Avengers' tower.

Marvel Short #6 – Party Time

As much theory and philosophy as I can pack into the making of these comics, and the building out of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, this is fundamentally, still, playing with toys, which means I can pair up versions of characters who won’t have a chance of meeting on the big screen….

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
