I really liked Domino in Deadpool 2, but when I started this comic project, I would not have predicted that she’d have become such a major player in my stories. Obviously, Zazie Beetz perfectly played Domino’s exasperation with the stupid situations unspooling around her in Deadpool 2; if there’s a single character from the Fox X-Men-And-Related-Characters Cinematic Universe that I’d like to see make the jump to the MCU, it’s definitely her (and Colossus).
I’m obviously only sometimes interested in playing the superhero hijinks of the Avengers and their foes with a straight face. Some of that has to do with the limitations of my chosen materials, like I’ve mentioned before, and some of it is because superheroes have an inherent and wonderful ridiculousness to them. In addition to all her other great traits as a character, Domino’s a great vehicle for commenting on that ridiculousness.
As to my characterization of her… Her “good luck” powers can obviously only carry her and her ideals so far, when bumping up against wealth, privilege, and megalomania. Being a community activist seems to demand playing a long game, and she was totally aware that she had to play that game. I think, though, when she decided not just to play by the system’s rules, but to actively participate in it, and legitimize it via her participation, and not even that paid immediate dividends, her exhaustion and irritation overwhelmed her better judgement. That’s why she quit the Avengers seemingly days after joining them. Good luck powers sometimes work in mysterious ways, though, so this snap decision might still pay off…
And, to elaborate further on the earlier theme of potential being wasted, due to desperation for basic necessities, we see in this strip that the Incredible Hulk, like Beast, works a menial job at Stark Industries so he can maintain his health care coverage! I, for one, would like to see the size of the keyboard he has to type on, to properly do his data entry and IT support.
