Daily Bugle intern extraordinaire Miles Morales runs down an office hallway, towards the sound of the voice of his boss, J. Jonah Jameson. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Ain’t No Easy Way Out’,” is visible at the top of the image.

All-New, Rebranded Avengers #36 – ‘Ain’t No Easy Way Out’

At this point, there’s not at lot new for me to babble about, with a new J. Jonah Jameson appearance. I liked to tell myself that I was going to be judicious with his appearances, that I didn’t want to wear out the welcome of my very favorite character to write. Obviously, I haven’t been…

Caption text at the top of the image sets the stage for this comic strip: “In the last decade of the 24th century…” In the bottom half of the image is the Constellation-class starship Ingenuity, in orbit around a nondescript moon, at the edge of the former Romulan Neutral Zone. The title of this comic series - Star Trek: Fenris Rangers - is visible along the middle-left edge.

Happy Monday morning! Perhaps the second installment of my Fenris Rangers toy comic and help dull the ache of a new week, at least a little. Anybody who’s ever tried to keep an aged car running should be able to sympathize with the challenges the Rangers face in maintaining their vintage starship. We’ve also got…

Shatterstar prepares for a significant fight, declaring that he’s headed for the roof of Avengers Tower. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Out from This Masquerade’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.

You can probably tell I had a ton of fun with this comic strip (at least, I hope you can). Trying to establish some kind of geography to the action with a hodgepodge of stock photos, layering all the VFX pieces on top of each other to, hopefully, make for some dramatic gunshots and explosions,…

Shuri, the Princess of Wakanda, Beast, King T’Chaka of Wakanda, and War Machine are all on a video conference call. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Learn Everything the Hard Way’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.

I’ve come to love these video meeting comic strips, because I don’t have to conjure reasons for the characters to all be in the same place, to have a conversation. And, because it lets me get really picky about the angles at which the characters are posed in the frame. And, because it gives me…

I’m still sorting out how I feel about the Captain Picard Show properly, but there were so many elements of the show’s world that fascinated me. Side characters, lines of dialogue, and locations that were only visited for a moment are still knocking around in my head. By far the most significant one is Seven…

The prison bus driven by Thor, and carrying the prisoners left over from the big Avengers vs. Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) fight, approaches the Vault, the big prison for superpowered criminals in Canon City, Colorado. The title of this comic strip, ‘Time Keeps Draggin’ On’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Here we are, The Vault! The prison where superpowered criminals are kept, at least until they break out, or are broken out. Very much Marvel’s answer to Arkham Asylum, although with more of a sterile mountain vibe, as opposed to Arkham’s oppressive gothic/industrial aesthetic. Also, I don’t believe The Vault’s ever had any pretension of…

Spider-Woman soars above the skyline of New York City, before she departs back to her home of Denver, Colorado. At the bottom of the image, the title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Look, Up in the Sky’,” is visible.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of Julia Carpenter’s Spider-Woman; there was an annual issue of Avengers West Coast (looks like #7, from a cursory internet search) where she was at the old Stapleton Airport* in Denver, and rescued an airplane that was careening off the runway in a winter storm. Julia had…

It’s not an Avengers story if the tension of an in-group argument isn’t cut by some somber news, right?

Black Widow gestures across the street, telling Rage and the Falcon to, “Take HYDRA down.” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘I Need a Little Room to Breathe’,” is visible at the top of the image.

I like this fight scene, by and large. I especially like the Falcon using his wings as an offensive weapon, and the little “motion” accessory stand for Cap’s shield. Speaking of Cap… What an addition to the cast today, huh? Captain America was my favorite Marvel superhero for years, and years, and years (probably still…

Still trapped in the same studio/prison void, Space Ghost announces that a surprise guest will be joining him, today!

Plenty of digital and actual ink has been spilled about The Matrix, enough that I don’t need to add my voice to whatever chorus is loudest at this particular moment. I do, however, think that I need to take Space Ghost’s trip down memory lane here to its most ridiculous conclusion, and recreate some scenes…

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
