All-New, Rebranded Avengers #42 – ‘Your Friends, They All Come Crawling’

Posted on October 14, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
In a Long Island beach house (per the location caption), a man stands with his back to the reader, holding a glass in a raised hand. He starts to say, “You’re, uh, you’re probably wondering…” The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Your Friends, They All Come Crawling’,” at the bottom of the image.
In a reverse angle from the title image, we see that this mysterious man is wealthy industrialist and Tony Stark wannabe Justin Hammer (although the character is “played” by an action figure of Jeff Goldblum’s character from Jurassic Park, Dr. Ian Malcolm). He’s addressing Mayor Gruenwald of New York City (named for longtime Marvel Comics writer/editor, Mark Gruenwald), the city’s military liaison, Major Steinberg (named for comics publisher/longtime Marvel staffer, “Fabulous Flo” Steinberg), and the Lieutenant Governor of New York State (named Gerber, in honor of comics writer Steve Gerber). Hammer claims he invited them to his mansion to discuss their common enemy. The Mayor guesses that he means the voters, but Hammer corrects him, saying, “The Avengers.”
The Mayor mocks both the Avengers and the state government to the Lieutenant Governor’s face.
As the city and state leadership almost come to blows, Hammer interrupts them, encouraging them to put their differences aside.
Hammer theatrically introduces a few more guests to the proceedings: Baron Zemo and one of his HYDRA agents!
The government employees are shocked at this arrival. Zemo explains that he and Hammer hit it off, when Hammer had him as a guest on his podcast.
The Mayor and the Major give the HYDRA agent and Zemo the cold shoulder, and the villains accuse them of being the true intolerant ones.
One more guest arrives late to the party: Spymaster! He and Zemo immediately begin to argue over an eBay bid Zemo made Spymaster put in for him.
Everybody begins to argue with everybody else, and Hammer takes a sip of his drink.
At the top half of the image, Justin Hammer throws his hands to the sky, outside of his mansion, and declares, “The essence of chaos! No one could have predicted this, except me!” (in directly quoting and paraphrasing lines spoken by Goldblum in Jurassic Park) At the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Hopefully, somebody besides me was excitedly anticipating the arrival of Justin Hammer, ever since his presence was confirmed in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe earlier this year. Tony Stark can never have too many rivals or antagonists, after all!

I think this marks the first of my comic strips without a single bona fide superhero in it, just antagonists, and regular citizens bumping into each other (or, as regular as high-ranking military officers and significant elected officials can be). I feel these characters do at least as good a job of infighting and being dysfunctional as the Avengers, themselves, and that’s no mean feat!

It took a while, staring at the characters in my toy collection, to decide just who should take the “role” of Justin Hammer in my comics, but I’m quite happy with the “winner” being Dr. Ian Malcolm from the Jurassic Park Amber Collection. It was really his water cup (which I’ve repurposed into an nonspecific beverage that he’s constantly sipping) accessory that won me over; I love a little accessory that can punctuate a moment, or emphasize a gesture.

Though we’ve not seen the taping of an episode of Justin Hammer’s podcast, that might not be the case forever! We’ve certainly been flies on the wall for J. Jonah Jameson’s program often enough that it might be interesting to see how somebody else manages their own media empire. Even if that empire depends on people like Baron Zemo to build it.

Speaking of media empires, don’t think I’ve forgotten Spymaster’s prior claim, that the Daily Bugle might just be the key to the Avengers’s downfall. It’s just… there are a lot of plates to spin here in the #PWMAFCU, and some of them have to spin more slowly than others.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
