All-New, Rebranded Avengers #32 – ‘Look, Up In The Sky!’

Posted on August 5, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Woman soars above the skyline of New York City, before she departs back to her home of Denver, Colorado. At the bottom of the image, the title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Look, Up in the Sky’,” is visible.
Spider-Woman expresses her appreciation for the solitude and the view, and when she lands, a voice she didn’t expect to hear addresses her from off-panel.
Spider-Man tells her that she’s landed in the same spot that he goes to get away from it all.
Spider-Man offers to take Spider-Woman out for a farewell dinner, before she leaves town.
They fire their webs in unison.
Spider-Woman says she’d like some pizza.
Spider-Man offers to take them to a place from which he used to deliver, because he gets a discount. Spider-Woman agrees, and says she’s glad they’re not on a real date.
Spider-Man and Spider-Woman swing down through NYC.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of Julia Carpenter’s Spider-Woman; there was an annual issue of Avengers West Coast (looks like #7, from a cursory internet search) where she was at the old Stapleton Airport* in Denver, and rescued an airplane that was careening off the runway in a winter storm. Julia had a lot of the same issues balancing her work and her personal life that Peter Parker did, and I’ve always loved those kinds of stories. I haven’t done a great job figuring out how to incorporate them in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe yet, but I hope I’m only a couple of appropriate “secret identity” figures away from making that happen…

Anyway, this is obviously a little bit of a “palate cleanser” comic, lacking any substantial plot progress or a fight scene, but I think there are at least a few fun character moments here, and some photographs that are nice to look at! I’m happy with how it turned out.

*If you’re reading this, you probably know that a number of the scenes in Die Hard 2 were shot in that airport – which was named for a Denver mayor who basically turned the city government over to the KKK, in order to get their support for a recall election campaign that he won – but if you didn’t, now you do!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
