All-New, All-Late-Night Avengers #96 – ‘No Sleep ‘Til Jonah’ (part 1)

Posted on June 28, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
On the set of his late-night-style talk show, “No Sleep ’Til Jonah,” Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson holds his phone in front of his face, and looks at it angrily. “Blast… Wakandan Tetris!” he shouts. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Late-Night Avengers Presents… ‘No Sleep ’Til Jonah’,” is visible at the top of the image.
As the studio cameras turn on, Jonah puts down his phone, and explains to his new viewers that this program is intended to bring more prominence to a voice missing from the national conversation: his!
Jonah declares himself a trustworthy source for reporting on the news, and goes on to declare that the Avengers are not trustworthy.
Over “video footage” from recent comic strips telling the story of the combined Avengers/X-Force assault on The Vault, Jonah singles out three particular characters he dislikes: Red Guardian (because he’s Russian), Iron Man (because he’s the most prominent Avenger) and Spider-Man (because Jonah has always hated Spider-Man).
Jonah doesn’t believe the Avengers’ claim that Spider-Man is not on their membership roster.
He shows some other “video footage,” specifically from Iron Man and War Machine’s heart-to-heart meeting with Spider-Man, when he was still wearing his Spider-Armor costume. Jonah declares that Tony Stark is now liable for any law-breaking Spider-Man or any Avenger gets up to, now that he’s retaken control of the organization.
Jonah accuses the Avengers of covering up all their shady dealings, from mutant terrorist alliances to the harboring of a public menace!
Jonah wonders what the good people of New York City might think of this news, and drops the bombshell that his son, heroic astronaut John Jameson, has begun working for the Bugle, and has been on the streets of the city asking people what they think of that news!
John Jameson stands before a brick wall, and promises that, after “these important messages,” their loyal viewers will find out just what their fellow New Yorkers think!

Welcome, welcome, to the first official installment of “No Sleep ‘Til Jonah,” the Daily Bugle’s late-night-style talk show! My affection for J. Jonah Jameson is a matter of significant record in the blog posts of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe; for a character who can credibly be accused of being one-note, he can do just about anything. Now, he’s hosting a talk show, and he’s helping his son, astronaut hero John Jameson, make a career pivot!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
