All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers #93 – ‘Watched The Last One Die’

Posted on June 7, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Outside of The Vault, the super-prison in the Rocky Mountains, the mutant Avenger Beast shakes his fist in anger, screaming, “Corrddd!” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘Watched The Last One Die’,” is visible at the top-left corner of the image.
Beast rushes madly at the Vault’s warden, Edwin Cord, whose mad plan for world domination has led him to violently mind-control every prisoner and guard within the Vault. Before he can get his hands on Cord’s throat, Beast is struck from off-panel by a strong energy blast.
Cord’s mental slave, the villain Klaw, stands smugly as steam rises from the sonic energy cannon that’s housed in his prosthetic left arm. Before he can get too smug about it, though, Spider-Man swings in on a web and kicks Klaw right in the kidneys.
Spider-Man covers Klaw in webbing, including across his mouth.
Cord’s associate, the Controller, who has been under the watchful eye of the mutant hero/activist Cable, punches his captor across the mouth, knocking him down.
From immediately behind them, the mutant Colossus steps forward, slamming his fist into the Controller’s jaw.
Colossus delivers a kick and another punch to the Controller.
Cord slams his hand down onto his walking stick, the jeweled head of which glows, and is clearly the source of his mind-controlling effect. He and the Controller argue about who should get to fight which superhero.
Cord brings out his prize fighter, Shatterstar, and declares that he’ll pit Shatterstar against any single X-Forcer or Avenger.

This fight’s going better for X-Force than it did last time, I think it’s safe to say! Though, it’s when you think you’re doing your best, that’s when the universe sneaks up behind you and pulls the rug out from under your feet!

I rather like how the first two images came out, with Beast’s battle cry, and subsequent derailing by Klaw from off-panel. Beast’s a character I’ve always adored – thanks primarily to the X-Men animated series, and George Buza’s unbeatable vocal performance – and I’ve been trying my best to do right by him, every time I’ve pulled him into my comic. He deserves better than being stuck behind his desk all day, and honestly, if he does get out from it and into the field from time to time, it might make him even more despondent when he has to go back to his Stark HR work. That’ll offer up further opportunities for his bleak coping humor!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
