All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers #94 – ‘This One Is a Lie’

Posted on June 14, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
In the main courtyard of the super-prison The Vault, warden-turned-would-be-world-conqueror Edwin Cord stands proudly before the mutant Avenger Shatterstar, whose mind has fallen totally under his control. Across from them stand Shatterstar’s friends and fellow mutants, Domino and Cable, the leaders of the activist group X-Force. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Coordinated Avengers Presents… ‘This One Is a Lie’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Domino and Cable argue over which one of them will fight Shatterstar in single combat. Cable is convinced that it has to be him, as X-Force is his team, and Shatterstar was once a member of X-Force.
Cable demands that Shatterstar let him fight with one of his twin swords. Shatterstar tosses a sword to Cable, who catches it easily.
They cross the swords, testing one another, before Cable brings his blade down with a mighty CLANG! that Shatterstar easily blocks. He mumbles Cable’s name, as though a thought deep within his mind is finally stirring.
Whatever Cable is trying to do, it’s not working quickly enough, as Shatterstar knocks his sword away, then roughly kicks him in the stomach.
Shatterstar punches Cable in the face with his sword hand, adding significant mass to the blow.
Shatterstar tosses the sword to his back hand and punches Cable again, knocking his friend to the ground. As he falls, Cable demands that Shatterstar fight through the mind control.
Standing above the fallen Cable, Shatterstar can finally string together the words he needs - he understands that his friend was willing to sacrifice himself to shake him loose from the mental domination.
Shatterstar picks up the sword he gave to Cable, holding one in each hand again. Cord orders him to finish Cable off, but Shatterstar refuses.

Well, here we finally are: the big test! Cord’s mind control held Shatterstar in thrall while he had to split his attention between multiple (friendly) targets, but to focus entirely on one friend? On, arguably, his closest friend? If you’re reading this comic strip, you’ve probably read and/or seen enough science fiction and superhero stories to know how this one’s going to end.

The ending isn’t the only reason to read a story, though! The journey can be as rewarding as the destination (I hope)!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
