All-New, All-Eventful Avengers #110 – ‘Only to Burn Up Both Our Hands’

Posted on October 18, 2023October 28, 2023 by phil.wrede
Atop a building’s roof in Long Island, the Avenger the Falcon, and the Young Avengers Frog-Man and Kate Bishop, stand guard over Justin Hammer’s fall celebration party. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Eventful Avengers Presents… ‘Only to Burn Up Both Our Hands’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Frog-Man is using his stereoscopic vision to look over the island, and reports no sign of villain disturbances. At Falcon’s prompting, Kate Bishop opens up radio contact with other patrolling Avengers…
…like Tigra, Rage, and the Vision, on the ground. Rage is pretty put out by having to miss out on the snacks at the party, and Vision seems very distracted.
Using his enhanced android sight, the Vision looks through the walls of Justin Hammer’s mansion to identify the location of his lost love, the Scarlet Witch. Tigra makes a note to tell Iron Man that guard duty did not take Vision’s mind off of the Witch.
As the Vision continues to pine, Frog-Man shouts out that he’s spotted movement on the beach beyond Hammer’s mansion - on the sand, and in the sky!
Coming up from the beach, we see a team of supervillains, including the Shocker, the Hobgoblin, Spymaster, and two HYDRA agents!
Kate Bishop contacts Justin Hammer, to warn him of the incoming attack, and within the party, the currently wheelchair-bound Tony Stark, his current romantic partner, the android Jocasta, and his sometime intern Luis also hear the message.
Luis transforms into his superhero alter ego, the Living Lightning! The force of his transformation blows a hole in the mansion’s roof.
Justin Hammer approaches Tony, to demand he promise to pay for the cost of the roof repair. Rather than respond, Tony asks Jocasta to lend a hand with the brawl that will certainly be ensuing outside.
Meanwhile, within the offices of the Daily Bugle, editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson and his son, John, argue over whether or not one of them should go to cover the Hammer Gala.
Their argument is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of John Walker, the U.S. Agent, who promises he has photos that will ruin Tony Stark’s reputation.

Welcome back to Justin Hammer’s fall ball (AKA the Hammer Gala), or, to the exterior of it, anyway! It only makes sense that the Avengers would be doing some security for the event, and that a few Young Avengers, like Kate Bishop and Frog-Man, would get the chance to log a few practicum hours. It’s not like anybody really expected a HYDRA sneak attack on Long Island!

It might be surprising, though, that John Walker, the U.S. Agent, was the one who brought salacious photographs of Tony Stark (or something related to Tony Stark) to the Daily Bugle. Just because he’s been a jerk to everyone he’s encountered in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, doesn’t mean the U.S. Agent was destined to betray the Avengers!

Speaking of surprises – the opposite of surprises, really – nobody’s shocked that, wherever the Scarlet Witch is, the Vision isn’t very far behind, right?

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
