All-New, All-Discrete Avengers #66 – ‘They See Your Every Move’

Posted on November 17, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
A C-130 transport airplane cruises through the sky, approaching Latverian airspace. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘They See Your Every Move’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Iron Fist looks outside of the airplane, through a window, and John Walker, the U.S. Agent, walks up behind him, immediately talking trash to him.
Deathlok takes Iron Fist’s side in the argument, and U.S. Agent escalates to picking a fight with both of them.
As the Agent sticks a finger in Deathlok’s face, Spider-Woman fires a web strand between the two of them, and begins to lecture them on proper team behavior.
The Agent doesn’t take the hint, and the other three heroes look ready to gang up on him.
U.S. Agent admits that he accepted this mission to get a shot at Doctor Doom, and for that, he’ll put his simmering anger aside.
This team of secret Avengers doublecheck their equipment, as the airplane’s crew readies the cargo bay doors to open.
The C-130’s rear doors open, and U.S. Agent runs for the exit at full speed.
The Secret Avengers leap out of the plane in turn, shouting various slogans to keep their spirits up.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Now that we’re wrapped on the Election Season adventure, we can really dig into the extra-legal incursions into Latveria! Hopefully, this team can complete its mission before they beat one another unconscious in the street.

It’s probably because of my formative comic-book-buying years, but I’ve always had a soft spot for John Walker, the U.S. Agent. I particularly enjoy him in Avengers West Coast, when he really came into his own as a jerk and a foil for the equally-hot-headed Hawkeye. He angrily self-sabotaged his relationship with everyone on the team, but he didn’t even have to get ticked to scream at Hawkeye. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating that I dearly hope he becomes an equally unhinged dick in the Thunderbolts movie.

A number of years ago, around about the time the very first Secret Avengers storyarc wrapped, I got to meet Ed Brubaker at a convention, and babble on at him for a minute about how much I enjoyed this book that brought together so many of my favorite Marvel characters: Steve Rogers, Beast, Black Widow, Valkyrie, War Machine, Nova… He asked me if I really knew why I liked it, and when I said I guessed I didn’t, he explained that what he, Mike Deodato, Jr., and the rest of the creative team had done done was make G.I. JOE with Marvel characters. While I’m not really sure that’s why I liked it, I certainly respected his authorial authority. My Secret Avengers here, then, are dedicated to those original Secret Avengers creators!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
