All-New, Overworked Avengers #56 – ‘Just Be Yourself’

Posted on July 6, 2022December 22, 2023 by phil.wrede
Miles Morales stands on a rooftop above the New York City streets, looking concerned. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Just Be Yourself’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Miles grapples with the idea of a world without Spider-Man.
He dramatically puts on a Spider-Man mask of his own, declaring his intention to serve the city, just like Spider-Man used to.
Miles thinks, aloud, that the spider that bit him did so because it was fated to, that he would be needed to step up, one day. He’s been preparing, and now, he’s ready.
The Falcon lands on the rooftop next to Miles, explaining that Rage and Thor told him to keep his eyes peeled for this particular young man.
The Falcon tells Miles he knows who he is, beneath the mask, and Miles can’t stop himself from describing how much he loves Spider-Man.
Falcon explains that he’s not here to stop Miles, but to help introduce him to the world of superheroics safely.
Falcon declares that it’s, “Thwipping time!” and Miles can barely keep himself from dying of embarrassment.
Miles web-swings through the city, while the Falcon follows him in the air.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

To pick up and continue into the daylight portion of Spider-Man’s No Good, Very Bad Night…* You didn’t really think that Miles Morales’ heart-to-heart with Thor, God of Thunder and Encouragement, was going to be the end of his spider-voyage, did you? Neither did Thor, or Rage, or War Machine, or Sam Wilson, the high-flying Falcon! Miles has a good number of male role models who are looking out for him, doesn’t he?

I doubt that Spider-Kid is going to be the alias that Miles chooses to go by, but maybe it’ll stick. You never know which nickname is going to stick!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
