All-New, Overworked Avengers #52 – ‘It Just Takes Some Time’

Posted on May 11, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
The exterior of the Daily Bugle building, as seen in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘It Just Takes Some Time’,” is visible on the left side of the image.
Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson is preparing for a celebratory interview, and is demanding champagne.
Jonah signs onto a video meeting, and is met by the King of Wakanda, T’Chaka.
T’Chaka takes issue with some of the Daily Bugle’s reporting about Spider-Man’s assault, and as Jonah is arguing with T’Chaka, quoting Hawkeye out of context, Hawkeye signs onto the call.
T’Chaka grills Hawkeye over the video chat, and Jonah takes the opportunity to complain about the Avengers some more.
T’Chaka tries to shout Jonah down, but Jonah refuses to take orders from a king he’s not bound to.
Jonah rails against the concept of the monarchy, writ large, and before T’Chaka can sign off, he surprises the king with…
...Cable! Jonah reveals he has news about security failures at The Vault, on top of the exclusive information about Spider-Man.
The meeting quickly falls apart, and everybody signs off, before Jonah has a chance to read any ad copy.
On the top half of the image, we see the logo for the Daily Bugle’s app, and its slogan: “‘Whether you hate Spider-Man, or you love him - and are therefore a bad person - get all your Spider-Man content here!’ - J. Jonah Jameson, editor-in-chief.” On the bottom half of the image are The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings (including Stan Lee, whose estate has not a single thing to do with this comic strip, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

While this comic strip isn’t a pure continuation of the events of Spider-Man’s No Good, Very Bad Night, they’re connected closely enough that I’d like to recommend Part 1 and Part 2 to you, if you’ve not had occasion to read them, yet.

I think my favorite J. Jonah Jameson moments are the ones when everybody else seems to be allied against him, but he doesn’t care, and more or less manages to bull his way to victory (or at least to a draw). His personality’s strong enough to equal most any five other characters, and while he’s an obnoxious blowhard, he still makes some good points, in spite of himself!

Even though I’m creating the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe myself, and am, in theory, only limited by time and the breadth of my action figure collection, what happens from one panel to the next can still surprise me. Jonah’s little rant to T’Chaka about keeping kings out of America wasn’t anything I’d planned; it was a little gift from the universe, in the moment, and I appreciate it.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
