All-New, Overworked Avengers #50 – ‘Don’t Write Yourself Off Yet’

Posted on April 13, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Man swings on a web, between the tall buildings of the New York City skyline at night. He tells himself, “C’mon, Spidey!” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Don’t Write Yourself Off Yet’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Spider-Man is tailing a yellow Hummer H2 from above, and he alights on a rooftop as the vehicle comes to a stop.
HYDRA agents pull an unidentified form out of the vehicle, and begin to act like they’re beating it up. Spider-Man won’t have that!
Spider-Man jumps off of the rooftop and launches himself at the HYDRA agents below.
Spider-Man beats up two of the HYDRA members in quick succession.
The last HYDRA agent falls, and Spider-Man offers assistance to the person on the ground, below.
It was a trap! The Red Skull was the figure the HYDRA agents were pretending to beat up, in a ruse set to hopefully snare Captain America.
Spider-Man tries to web his way out of the trap, but the Red Skull shoots him in the leg.
The Red Skull decides that Spider-Man can still be useful to him, to send a message to the other Avengers. Two more HYDRA agents converge on Spider-Man, who cradles his wound on the ground. The HYDRA agents are clearly going to beat him brutally.
The credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Fifty strips in the “main” story of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe! Fifty! 5-0! It’s as arbitrary a number to celebrate as any other number, but this is a lot of comic strips (for me)!

I wish I could say that I’d had this dramatic, cliff-hanger-y Spider-Man tale planned in celebration for a while, but the truth of the matter is, I don’t often know how many comic strips it’ll take for me to tell a story to my satisfaction (particularly since I’m bouncing from several different groups of characters at a time, anymore). This is, at least, a fun coincidence, getting to “introduce” the Red Skull into my comics, as a long-time fan of Captain America’s!

If you’ve made it this far, I hope you’ve enjoyed these 50+ installments as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them, and here’s to at least fifty more!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
