All-New, Overworked Avengers #53 – ‘Everything, Everything’ll Be Just Fine’

Posted on May 25, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
Miles Morales sits on the rooftop of Avengers Tower, and Thor stands next to him. They both stare off into the distance. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Everything, Everything’ll Be Just Fine’,” is visible on the left side of the image.
Thor questions Miles as to how he was able to make it to the top of Avengers Tower without being stopped by anybody. Miles mostly evades the question.
Thor calls Miles by name, and Miles asks how he knows his name.
Thor tells Miles that Rage has spoken highly of him, and Miles shouts that he just wants to be left alone, to think.
Miles reveals that it’s Spider-Man’s injury that has him on edge, and he asks why Thor isn’t visiting his injured compatriot. Miles doesn’t like the answer Thor gives him.
Thor tries to weasel his way out of his answer, but Miles won’t let him, and talks to Thor about how much Spider-Man means to him.
Miles talks about feeling helpless, and Thor tells him how he copes with that feeling.
Miles doesn’t really believe this story of Thor’s, either, but it does light a fire under him.

Welcome back, once again, to the “main story,” where we’re continuing to deal with the fallout from the Red Skull and HYDRA’s ambush of Spider-Man, and his resulting injuries, both physical and by the media! Now, today, we try to consider how a fallen hero might impact those who’ve looked up to him; in this case, the reluctant Daily Bugle intern who’s managed to keep his Spider-Fandom alive, Miles Morales.

Spending as much time as he does at the epicenter of the anti-Spider-Man storm, you’d figure Miles might have gotten beaten down. He might have seen his idealism wither, and eventually turn on his hero, if only because of the sheer bludgeoning force of Jonah’s personality. He hasn’t, though. Miles still loves Spider-Man, still draws inspiration from him. Even though they’ve never met, Spider-Man’s done so much for Miles that Miles wants to repay the favor, now that his hero needs help. What could that be, I wonder…?

When the idea of this Spider-Injury came to me, I knew I had to find a way to have Miles talk through his feelings with Fat Thor, the God of Thunder and Encouragement. It’s been a bit, since Thor has been able to have a good heart-to-heart with a friend, but he’s always there when you need him. Unless he’s saving another planet.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
