All-New, Overworked Avengers #48 – ‘We’re Face to Face, My Friend’

Posted on March 16, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
Outside of a destroyed cell in The Vault, Dazzler jumps over the mind-controlled Shatterstar’s sword, as he swings it at her. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘We’re Face to Face, My Friend’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Dazzler tries to blind Shatterstar, just as she did previously with Thunderstrike, but she has no success.
After Dazzler’s attack fails, Warpath lifts Shatterstar off the ground in a powerful grip.
Shatterstar slips out of Warpath’s grip and flips over him, landing on the floor behind.
Shatterstar cuts Warpath across his back, and quickly pivots to knock Cable’s gun out of his hand.
Cable and Warpath get a few good punches in, before Shatterstar recovers.
Dazzler notices that a number of Guardsmen are inbound on their location, and encourages X-Force to retreat.
The mutant heroes escape The Vault, promising to come back for Shatterstar, again.
The residents of The Vault return to their normal business, at least until Darkhawk tells Thunderstrike that he’s learned a few prisoners escaped in the commotion.

Welcome, dear reader, to Part 3 of the X-Force Assault on the Vault! There were fewer opportunities for dramatic visual effects in this strip than in Part 2, but I think the writing was funnier this time, so it sort of evens out. And, if you want to read Part 1, well, you can go here to do that!

Any variation on, “Let’s do this the old-fashioned way,” when characters in an action movie have to fight one another up close and personal will always get a rousing fist pump from me. My favorite version, it’s probably no surprise, is in Road House, when Jimmy pulls a gun on Dalton and declares, “I’m gonna kill you the old-fashioned way!” I would argue (and have often, when describing this moment) that hand-to-hand combat is way more old-fashioned than a pistol, but Road House is a movie where what I think of as “logic” rarely applies, so what I think is completely beside the point.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
