All-New, Rebranded Avengers #35 – ‘Out from this Masquerade’

Posted on August 26, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Shatterstar prepares for a significant fight, declaring that he’s headed for the roof of Avengers Tower. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Out from This Masquerade’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Domino orders the Avengers to assemble up on the roof, and before Shatterstar is able to start running, a military helicopter opens fire on the tower, blowing apart a large window.
Soldiers step into the tower, as Shatterstar starts running up the internal staircase.
One soldier opens fire on Shatterstar. The mutant warrior blocks all the bullets with the blades of his swords, knocks the soldier out, and keeps on running.
As the helicopter keeps circling the tower, the Falcon and Moon Knight make their way onto the building.
Shatterstar dodges another soldier, and leaps out onto the roof of Avengers Tower.
A number of soldiers face down Shatterstar, Moon Knight, the Falcon, War Machine, and Domino. Everybody’s ready to fight.
Rather than risk his teammmates’ lives and safety, Shatterstar suddenly decides to surrender, and turn himself over to military custody.
The helicopter hovers by the edge of the building, and the soldiers order Shatterstar onto it.
On the top half of the image, the Avengers watch in frustration as the military helicopter flies away, with Shatterstar aboard. On the bottom half of the image, we see the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

You can probably tell I had a ton of fun with this comic strip (at least, I hope you can). Trying to establish some kind of geography to the action with a hodgepodge of stock photos, layering all the VFX pieces on top of each other to, hopefully, make for some dramatic gunshots and explosions, sounding out sound effects in my head to be able to type them out coherently, and equipping these generic military guy action figures to take on the Avengers… I think it was a fun little action sequence!

Can you imagine what it would be like, to get assigned to the team that’s supposed to take an Avenger into custody, and not even be given one piece of stolen Stark tech to try and even the odds? That sounds like the kind of mission you actually get yourself injured to get out of.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
