All-New, Rebranded Avengers #38 – ‘Can’t Believe This is It’

Posted on September 16, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Man and Spider-Woman (who’s back, for some reason) watch the streets of New York City at night, from high atop the roof of a building. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Can’t Believe This Is it’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Spider-Man and Spider-Woman agree that it’s more fun to swing from rooftops than it is to drive.
The yellow Hummer H2 they’ve been watching parks in a dark parking lot, next to an APC.
HYDRA agents step out of both the H2 and the APC.
5. Even though both of them knew they were waiting for HYDRA agents to appear, Spider-Man can’t stop himself from exclaiming how much he hates HYDRA. Moon Knight quietly lands on the rooftop behind them.
Spider-Woman emphasizes, again, that she and Spider-Man aren’t on a date. Moon Knight explains that he’s been following Baron Zemo, the leader of HYDRA, to this meeting.
Zemo steps out of his purple convertible.
As a HYDRA agent attempts to address Zemo, the Baron slaps the flunkie across his face.
After the HYDRA agent puts on a face mask, at Zemo’s order, the Baron makes his declaration that HYDRA will restore the greatness of the old world, and purge the foolishness of the new.

Obviously, HYDRA has to have a leader; this gang of frustrated and obnoxious men wouldn’t have organized itself without someone pulling them all together. Since old men have been manipulating young men into fighting their wars for them for as long as humans have been waging war, it made sense to me to make Baron Zemo HYDRA’s big boss.

But, don’t worry, Red Skull fans; he’s scheduled to make an appearance soon enough…

Speaking of frustrated, Spider-Man can’t catch a break with Spider-Woman, can he? On the one hand, she was supposed to leave the Avengers and NYC to go back to Denver, and she hasn’t, which might be a sign that Spider-Man has a chance with her. On the other hand, she has explicitly and repeatedly told him that she doesn’t want to date him. What’s a guy who doesn’t know how to talk to women supposed to do?

It’s probably obvious to even a casual reader by now that I’m, to varying degrees of success and failure, photographically blowing up Hot Wheels and/or Matchbox cars to serve as many of the vehicles in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe. For one thing, they’re a heck of a lot cheaper than vehicles scaled to actually fit Marvel Legends-sized characters, and for another, they’re so much more plentiful. You can get yourself so very many Hot Wheels for the cost of a motorcycle that a 6-inch tall action figure can actually sit on.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
