In the office of the warden of The Vault (per the location caption), two Vault Guardsmen shove Shatterstar forward. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘I Hear That Whistle Blowin’,” is visible at the top of the image.

All-New, Overworked Avengers #43 – ‘I Hear That Whistle Blowin’

Happy 2022, everybody! Some focused free time between academic semesters helped me get back on track with the comic! In an attempt to achieve some better work/life/hobby balance, I’m going to go back to the schedule where I alternate a “main story” comic with a 4-panel “joke” comic each week, so while that main story…

As New Year's Eve fireworks explode around him, the mighty Thor soars through the air, bidding a fond farewell to 2021.

Marvel Short #26 – Never Brought to Mind Again, 2021

Posted on December 29, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

2020 and 2021 were, I think, each tremendously rough rides in their own similar and distinct ways. I know New Year’s Eve is a high-order human construct, and that the flipping over of the calendar to a “new” year doesn’t actually do anything to change the world around us, but it’s incentive to try, and…

His face covered in a disposable surgical mask, J. Jonah Jameson sings a parody of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," to encourage people to behave responsibly, while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the lives of countless people around the world.

Marvel Short #25 – Merry Healthy, Everyone!

I feel like art-as-advocacy has not had the long-term punchiness in the pandemic that many of us who genuinely believe in the potential of art to communicate ideas, encourage empathy, and impact the world hoped it had. Or, at least, in my corner of the world, I’ve not seen it be as successful as maybe…

Rage attempts to make a connection with Hawkeye over their (apparently) mutual love of short sleeves. Hawkeye, regretfully, has to disabuse Rage of his assumption.

Marvel Short #24 – Short-Sleeved Avengers

Posted on December 15, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

One of my favorite parts about these short, 4-panel comic strips is in trying to pair up characters who don’t get a lot of time together normally, and see how they bounce off one another. I think a longer-form Rage and Hawkeye adventure could be a lot of fun, if I ever have the time…

Hawkeye tries to coach Captain America through the proper placement of his computer's webcam for video conference meetings. It... doesn't go smoothly.

Marvel Short #23 – Self-Portrait Avengers

Posted on December 9, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

Hawkeye never thought he’d go from being the Avengers’ resident Luddite to providing on-the-fly tech support to Captain America…

In the early morning winter snow, Spider-Man dances around New York City, singing Christmas carols to himself.

Marvel Short #22 – An Especially Spidey Christmas

Into the Spider-Verse is a movie I’ve not been able to get out of my head since the moment I saw it in the theater, and while I’m certainly not trying to be (nor capable of being) as visually imaginative as that movie, I’d at least like to tip my hat to it, especially around…

Spider-Man and Hawkeye bump into one another at a cemetery. It's an awkward interaction.

Marvel Short #21 – Making Friends as an Adult

Posted on November 25, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

One of the obvious downsides of maintaining your secret identity is that you can’t have serious conversations with your super-coworkers. Not without resorting to a lot of euphemisms like, “A friend of mine…” or, “I heard someone say once…” Especially when you’re Spider-Man, and it’s not easy for you to make friends!

As he walks through the stacks of his local library, Rage can't believe how many books written by Tom Clancy (and people like Tom Clancy) are on the shelves.

Marvel Short #20 – Dad-lit Avengers

Posted on November 18, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

I’ve mentioned before that Rage was a character who caught my attention in some of the earliest comics I ever remember buying; what I particularly liked about him was how he didn’t really try to affect a superhero “persona.” He was a person (a 13-year old kid, in fact) and a superhero in equal measure….

The Red Guardian stands by himself, singing the chorus to Maroon 5's song 'Moves Like Jagger,' only he's replaced the word "Jagger" with the word "Jager," as in the Jagermeister liquor. Captain Marvel tries to correct him, but Red Guardian argues that he's familiar with the song because of a Jagermeister commercial in his home country that used the tune of 'Moves Like Jagger' to sell the product.

Marvel Short #19 – Moves Like…?

I wish I had anything useful about the genesis of this idea, but I don’t. Inspiration just struck, and would not let go, until I had finished bringing this comic strip into existence. It still makes me laugh, looking at it, and I hope it’s entertaining to you, too! Red Guardian’s actually a funny character,…

After the Midtown High school day has ended, Eugene Patilio reveals to Miles Morales that he is, secretly, the Fabulous Frog-Man! Unfortunately, Eugene can't unzip the costume to show his face to the world.

Marvel Short #18 – Schoolyard Avengers

Posted on November 4, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede

The Fabulous Frog-Man is a character (and particularly a character design) that I’ve always adored; his desperation to do the right thing, in spite of his inexperience and (some might say) incompetence is very endearing. My hope is to, eventually, build out the cast of characters – students and faculty alike – at Midtown High…

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
