All-New, All-Interlude Avengers #142 – ‘If We Could Do It All Again’

Posted on June 12, 2024June 19, 2024 by phil.wrede
S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Wurmser (“played” here by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger from the movie Terminator: Dark Fate) holds his smartphone in a hidden facility. “Thanks for taking my call, Mr. President,” he says. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Interlude Avengers Presents… ‘If We Could Do It All Again’,” is visible at the top of the image.
President Kirby (“played” here by an action figure of Bruce Campbell, from the Evil Dead franchise) replies to Wurmser from the White House, indicating he’d been expecting the agent’s call, ever since he returned from the Negative Zone.
Wurmser confronts Kirby about the identity of the cloned S.H.I.E.L.D. trooper he tried to rescue, and Kirby straight-up admits it. A flashback sequence begins, when Wurmser tells the story of how his family was killed.
Iron Man and War Machine pursue an Ultron drone in the skies, long ago, above the home Wurmser and his family had made for themselves.
When Iron Man and War Machine destroy the drone, its power core goes critical, and the resulting explosion obliterates Wurmser’s home, his family, and presumably, a lot more besides.
Back in the present, Kirby tries to shift the blame for the decision to clone Wurmser’s dead son onto other people, but the agent won’t have it.
In another part of the installation, as part of her grieving process for her dead comrades, Kate Neville washes the red dye out of her hair, and returns it to its natural blonde. She changes into a different set of clothes, and walks out to say goodbye to her friends, G.W. Bridge and “Dum Dum” Dugan.
Bridge and Dugan reluctantly wish Kate the best, and promise to “get even” for her.
In Avengers Tower, Luis Garcia-Lopez surprises Tony Stark when he tries to ask for a raise, and Tony’s reaction causes Luis to transform into the Living Lightning!
Luis still tries to broach the subject of a raise, while simultaneously, out on the helipad, the android Jocasta and Spider-Man begin an awkward conversation of their own.
The conversation is interrupted, however, as Spider-Man’s spidey sense is triggered by an attack from the Hobgoblin!
A thrown pumpkin bomb sends Jocasta and Spider-Man flying. As Spider-Man tries to struggle to his feet, he’s knocked unconscious by the stealthily approaching Shocker. The criminal enforcer Hammerhead places another pumpkin bomb near Jocasta, claiming it’s a “special EMP bomb.”
The bomb explodes, knocking Jocasta’s systems offline. As Captain America rushes to the helipad, the Hobgoblin flies away with her. Spider-Man, in anguish, apologies to Cap for his failure to protect Jocasta from this unexpected assault.

We hinted at Agent Wurmser’s tragic backstory when he was originally introduced, but it’s taken a while to finally reveal it (and, if you’d like a hint of where I’d like to take his story, I’d recommend taking a look at the battles his namesake, Count von Wurmser, waged in 1796. If you know… when you see it, you’ll know)! I’m so pleased that I found another use for that Arnold action figure from The Terminator that I love so much, with the flashback sequence.

Unlike the last interlude in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, this really will be a brief break in the action, this week! It’s a pretty action-packed break, I hope you’ll agree!

Though this is officially an “interlude,” much of what’s referenced happened in the last month-and-change of stories (minus the standalone Deadpool & Pyslocke comic), so if you’re in need of a refresher, or just stumbled upon this little corner of the internet, and want to know what’s up with it, or simply want something more to read, the comics contained in the links below just might help you out:

  • Part One (wherein Miles Morales starts his internship!)
  • Part Two (wherein Reed plans a trip to the Negative Zone!)
  • Part Three (wherein the trip goes slightly sideways!)
  • Part Four (wherein a fire-y discovery is made!)
  • Part Five (wherein we return to the Baxter Building, after a few months away!)
  • Part Six (wherein the enemy of their enemy is S.H.I.E.L.D.’s friend!)
  • Part Seven (wherein not everybody makes it back from the Negative Zone)
  • Part Eight (wherein there’s a lot of bad news, all around)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
