All-New, Overworked Avengers #58 – ‘I’m Still Alive’

Posted on August 3, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Outside of a Stark Industries warehouse, War Machine stands patiently as Spider-Man swings down to meet him. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘I’m Still Alive’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Spider-Man admits to War Machine that he doesn’t feel all the way recovered after his gunshot wound by the hand of the Red Skull, and the subsequent beating he received by HYDRA goons.
War Machine reminds Spider-Man that this isn’t the first time he’s been hurt, as a superhero, but Spider-Man says this is the first time he’s felt scared.
War Machine talks about how he worked to overcome his own fears.
War Machine takes Spider-Man into the warehouse, offering up a vague idea that he thinks might be helpful. As time passes, War Machine wonders what’s taking Spider-Man so long.
Spider-Man emerges from the “armor printer,” revealing the silver-and-black suit of Spider Armor that he’s had made for himself.
War Machine asks Spider-Man why he chose a suit with none of his iconic blue-and-red colors, and Spider-Man announces that he’s entered a new gritty era.
Spider-Man declares his intention to get revenge on HYDRA, and War Machine tries to startle him out of his violent mindset.
As War Machine tries to counsel Spider-Man, Spider-Man remarks that War Machine says a lot of the same things that Spider-Man’s uncle used to say.

Spider-Man’s road to recovery from his No Good, Very Bad Night has been kind of a protracted one – from the moment of his injury to his subsequent rescue – and it’s one for which he’s not been on-panel! A lot of people have talked about him, and about what he means to them, but Spider-Man hasn’t gotten a chance to talk about that night and how it affected him for himself. So, he’s doing that today!

Spider-Man’s whole thing is improperly processing traumatic events, so it makes sense to me that he goes a little Death Wish after getting jumped by the Red Skull and HYDRA. People with far fewer super-powers than him have gone much deeper into the deep end! I’m not saying I agree, mind you.

War Machine is often a sounding board for other Avengers in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe; I think it’s because he knows what a good second banana has to do, from hanging out with Iron Man for so long. Sidekicks need to ask the right questions, to spark realizations in the mind of the hero, and to try and keep them on a good path. Maybe that’s just what a good friend does, too!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
