All-New, All-Thoughtful Avengers #87 – ‘There Goes My Hero’

Posted on April 26, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
In his Iron Man armor, but wearing no helmet, Tony Stark stands proudly above a New York City building at night. He smugly asks, “Surprised?” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Thoughtful Avengers Presents… ‘There Goes My Hero’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Spider-Man, in his greyscale Spider-Armor, demands Tony Stark explain why he goes around being Iron Man. Tony asks if saving the world is somehow not a good use of his time?
Spider-Man points out that Stark could solve the clean energy crisis, instead of punching robots. Stark points out that Iron Man is not the limit of the things he does to help humanity, and goes on to point out that people like heroes. Especially, he emphasizes, ones who behave like heroes.
War Machine lands on the rooftop between Spider-Man and Iron Man, interrupting their conversation.
War Machine accuses Stark of behaving recklessly. Stark argues that, if Spider-Man wouldn’t listen to Iron Man, he believed he’d listen to Tony Stark.
Spider-Man and War Machine argue about how, even though you might have great power, you might not have great judgement.
Spider-Man admits that he wasn’t listening to War Machine when they met outside of the lab where his Spider-Armor was created, but now, he thinks he’s neither been dressing nor behaving like a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Stark replaces his Iron Man helmet, and invites Spider-Man back to Avengers Tower for another crack at redesigning his costume.
We see Iron Man, War Machine, and Spider-Man bring their fists together with a might CLANG! through the scope of a mysterious sniper’s rifle.
At the top half of the image, we see Charles Little Sky communicating with the President about what he’s observed. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

It’s only taken several unsuccessful heart-to-heart discussions to get Spider-Man to admit the error of his ways! If the Shocker couldn’t get him to see how far off the path of the superhero he’d gotten, at least Iron Man finally did. If he hadn’t, I don’t know who would’ve been left to escalate the task to!

Readers paying close attention to the wreckage Spider-Man left in the S.H.I.E.L.D. prison, after he sprang Moon Knight, might have noticed Charles Little Sky missing among the webbed-up agents. If you’ve been wondering what he’s gotten up to, now you know! And knowing, well… If you know, you know.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
