All-New, Rebranded Avengers #30 – ‘I Need a Little Room to Breathe’

Posted on July 22, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
Black Widow gestures across the street, telling Rage and the Falcon to, “Take HYDRA down.” The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘I Need a Little Room to Breathe’,” is visible at the top of the image.
As their food truck burns, the elderly operators are told to move away from it by the attacking HYDRA agents.
The Falcon lands between the elderly couple and the food truck, using his mechanical wings to block a hail of bullets.
The Falcon hits a HYDRA agent with his wings so hard that the agent is sent flying high into the air.
More HYDRA agents pour out of the APC, and several of them gang up on Rage, shooting him mercilessly and repeatedly.
6. As the HYDRA goons take a moment to reload, a red, white, and blue shield sails in and strikes several of them.
Captain America catches his shield on the rebound, and the couple who instigated the whole incident runs away in terror.
Black Widow downs the remaining HYDRA goon, and the Falcon makes sure to tell the food truck’s operators that the Avengers will do everything they can to make sure they’re reimbursed appropriately for the loss they’ve suffered.
Captain America offers his hand to Rage, saying, “America still needs your help” (in a quotation of the line from the opening titles of the Captain America and the Avengers arcade game).
On the top half of the image, Black Widow and the Falcon wonder if Captain America is back for good now, or just a short visit. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I like this fight scene, by and large. I especially like the Falcon using his wings as an offensive weapon, and the little “motion” accessory stand for Cap’s shield.

Speaking of Cap… What an addition to the cast today, huh? Captain America was my favorite Marvel superhero for years, and years, and years (probably still is, on a real gut level). I remember seeing an action figure of his, back in an old Kay-Bee Toys in the local shopping mall, when I was very little, and being enraptured by the possibilities of his shield. I’d never read a Captain America comic before, but it hardly mattered. He had an incredible accessory! A shield! It can do so many things!

I felt very seen when, in Captain America: The First Avenger, Cap tells Howard Stark that the shield is, “handier than you might think.”

On the subject of quotes, I’ve mentioned before that I was dead-set on finding a way to quote as much of the limited dialogue from the Captain America and the Avengers game as I could in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, and I’m ecstatic to have gotten to do it again, here.

In retrospect, I think having HYDRA try to gun Rage down in the street (offhandedly) was in poor taste, at best. I never touch on it again, which could either be a good attempt to move past a trauma-evoking mistake, or a real missed opportunity to try and dig into the symbolism of a bulletproof superhero. It depends on where you sit, I suppose.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
