In the Batcave (a playset from the Batman ’66 TV series), Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s butler, attempts to hand him a mug, saying, “I brought you some tea, sir.” Batman does not even look at Alfred as he raises his hand and replies, “I’m too busy, Alfred.”

I often have too much to say about my toy comics, but I love this one so dearly, that I’m going to let it speak for itself. Except that, every time I read this, I hear Batman’s lines in Dietrich Bader’s voice, and it makes me so, so happy.

On a video call, New York City's Mayor Gruenwald (named for longtime Marvel Comics writer/editor Mark Gruenwald) and Domino argue over which one of them first realized HYDRA were the bad guys, and whether or not that actually matters.

It’s probably obvious that I have no academic or professional background in graphic design, but man, when a good idea hits, I’m glad I have just enough working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator to bring it, more-or-less, to life by myself. The PizzaRatNet logo was something I threw together in a slightly feverish state, certainly…

Outside of the breached wall surrounding The Vault, Cable beckons to the rest of X-Force. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘One of These Days, I’ll Chase You Down’,” is visible at the top of the image.

Welcome to Part 2 of X-Force’s Assault on the Vault! If you haven’t read it already, you can take a look at Part 1 here! I really enjoyed how a lot of the “visual effects” in this strip turned out; it’s taken something like 14 months of regularly working on the comic, but I think…

In his mysteriously well-lit New York City apartment, Wolverine welcomes a rare guest: Luke Cage, the Power Man!

As of the day this comic was originally posted, it’s been around 21.5 years since the first Fox X-Men movie came out. It’s probably no surprise that my one of my then-closest friends and I took a bus to the movie theater to see it on opening day; as dyed-in-the-wool fans of Marvel Comics, and…

Back at The Vault, now, looking over the mountains surrounding the prison. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘You Make Me Dizzy, Running Circles in My Head’,” is visible near the bottom of the image.

I’d like to think it was obvious that somebody was going to come along and break Shatterstar out of The Vault, and that it was equally obvious it wouldn’t be the Avengers. Enter: X-Force, the team of mutant rebels that was teased in offhand dialogue over a year ago! If I was going to introduce…

Rage and Prince T'Challa of Wakanda discuss their mutual concern about climate change, and about how seriously Wakanda is taking the threat.

Marvel Short #29 – Changing Climate Change

Again, in this world of obscenely advanced technology, and people truly empowered to use it for the benefit of humanity writ large, I have to imagine we would be a lot further along on addressing some of the truly existential crises than we are in reality. An activist Wakandan state alone would be able to…

At Avengers Tower, Domino and War Machine stand face-to-face. She says, “You’re not seriously leaving.” The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘The Terror of Knowing’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.

I think one of the first “ideas” I had for these comics was to make War Machine and Domino a couple. It’s in the very first installment of All-New, All-Remote Avengers! I believe the most sophisticated my thinking had gotten was that it could be funny to see the perpetually straight-laced Jim Rhodes try to…

The Vision asks War Machine why he changes his armor far less frequently than Iron Man. War Machine contends he's more comfortable with himself than Iron Man is.

There are a number of threads that became so crucial to the tapestry of the MCU that I can’t imagine it without them, and one of the most significant, for me, is Paul Bettany’s voice. For as much as I enjoy both incarnations of The Vision, I loved JARVIS so, so very much. I assume…

In the office of the warden of The Vault (per the location caption), Shatterstar kneels on the floor in exhaustion. The warden stands in the foreground, only his leg visible. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘I Hang My Head and Cry’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.

Given what I wrote for the comic strip where Justin Hammer (as played by Dr. Ian Malcolm) was introduced, it’s probably no surprise that Jurassic Park was a formative movie for me, and remains one of my all-time favorites. If it wasn’t obvious before, it has got to be, now, with the late Sir Richard…

Back in Colorado, Spider-Woman thanks Thor for transporting her back home from New York City. While Thor knows he'll miss Spider-Woman as a full-time Avenger, he also knows she won't miss Spider-Man's awkward romantic overtures towards her.

Marvel Short #27 – No Place Like Home

There are a few jokes that I will never get tired of having the characters, especially Thor and Spider-Woman, tell, and when I can find a way to tie two of them together, those are really thrilling moments for me.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
