All-New, Overworked Avengers #45 – ‘The Terror of Knowing’

Posted on February 2, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
At Avengers Tower, Domino and War Machine stand face-to-face. She says, “You’re not seriously leaving.” The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘The Terror of Knowing’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
War Machine tries to explain, and Domino interrupts him, to ask if he’ll take his helmet off, before he tries to be serious.
War Machine removes his helmet, and before he can keep talking, Domino takes his hand, asking him if he thinks being a superhero means running away from his problems.
When she challenges him, War Machine admits that he thinks he can protect Domino from the government, and the military, by running away, and Domino reminds him that there are so many more people who need his protection than her.
Domino tells War Machine that the forces allied against them will find another excuse to harass the Avengers, even if he leaves.
The Mayor, especially, will take up any cause that points him in opposition to the Avengers, Domino says. War Machine asks if they can take the elevator up to the roof, as he promised to meet Vision soon.
Atop the roof of Avengers Tower, Domino flat-out tells War Machine that, if they’re going to be together, she wants him standing next to her, not trying to draw threats away from her.
War Machine puts his helmet back on, and agrees to Domino’s terms.

I think one of the first “ideas” I had for these comics was to make War Machine and Domino a couple. It’s in the very first installment of All-New, All-Remote Avengers! I believe the most sophisticated my thinking had gotten was that it could be funny to see the perpetually straight-laced Jim Rhodes try to stretch himself to make a relationship with Domino – who justifiably believes that things will always work out for her – work. I didn’t really expect theirs to be a story I got so invested in, and for them to frequently be the center of gravity for the comic.

I think they’ve both helped one another to grow, even if we haven’t seen them explicitly discuss this growth in the panels of the comic. Although, this growth isn’t, I don’t think, in changing so much as it is in recognizing aspects of themselves. Domino has always been inclined to put the work in; her background as an activist proves that. War Machine trusts his teammates, which he learned to do long before he put on a suit of powered armor. But, I think they’ve fostered the development of those traits in one another, and that’s been nice to see.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
