Marvel Short #30 – Fashion Show at Lunch!

Posted on February 23, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
In his mysteriously well-lit New York City apartment, Wolverine welcomes a rare guest: Luke Cage, the Power Man!
Wolverine admits the reason he's maintained this apartment for as long as he has: rent control! Cage observes that the apartment is very... spare, and Wolverine argues that he's not much of a decorator.
Wolverine declares to Cage that he has memories he values, and some keepsakes from those most treasured memories, ones that nobody has ever seen before.
Wolverine declares to Cage that he's going to show him "decoration and style" like he's never seen before. There's a time jump, after which Cage complains about how long he's been standing around.
Wolverine emerges from the back of the apartment, wearing his classic yellow-and-brown costume.
Cage makes fun of Wolverine for being so proud of his very stylistically outdated costume.
When Cage points out that the yellow in Wolverine's costume is the same shade as his t-shirt, Wolverine gets so annoyed that he pops his claws.

As of the day this comic was originally posted, it’s been around 21.5 years since the first Fox X-Men movie came out. It’s probably no surprise that my one of my then-closest friends and I took a bus to the movie theater to see it on opening day; as dyed-in-the-wool fans of Marvel Comics, and Star Trek, we were easy marks for it, and got enraptured by Hugh Jackman’s performance as Wolverine the same as most everybody else in the audience.

It’s weird to think that Jackman’s Wolverine has been a fixture of my life for longer than I’ve legally been an adult.

Like most of the other people who cheered when he said, “Bub,” for the first time in that first X-Men movie, I’ve been hoping to get to see Jackman put on one classic Wolverine suit or another,* since the summer of 2000. Fortunately, thanks to the magic of action figures, and the patience of another good friend of mine offering his perspective on photographic color correction, I am now able to put Hugh Jackman into a classic Wolverine costume! I think it works.

*Personally, I hope it’s the brown-and-yellow, like the one that was teased in that deleted scene from The Wolverine. I’m not sure the blue-and-yellow would translate as well to live-action as other people apparently think it will.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
